KKr
Buildings are supposed to stand for about a hundred years, so if you can design something like that, why don't you ? There are many tenders worldwide for talented Architects to be won. So, stop hiding your many talents, and make a winning design then Mr. Nativist Architect. madmitch
It is on the reserved occupation list. 30. Job-related professional architectural design drawings about price director of construction or advice. Yes, I kept a copy of that wonderfully translated list. This is one of the more comprehensible ones. Still doesn't stop the guy from being a xenophobic so and so.
ratcatcher
Just now, Father Fintan Stack said: Architect is an occupation prohibited to foreigners. Also, as a foreigner you cannot own an architect business in Thailand. Not quite accurate. (at least in bygone days) Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall And The Italian Jobs. One year after the completion of the Amphorn Satharn Villa within the Dusit Palace in 1906, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) commissioned the construction of a reception hall to replace the one built during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV.). The building in Italian Renaissance and neoclassical style was commissioned to the architects Mario Tamagno and Annibale Rigotti. Marble from Carrara, Italy and other foreign materials were used. Italian sculptor Vittorio Novi, who would later also work on the Mahadthai Udthit Bridge (สะพานมหาดไทยอุทิศ), was employed with his nephew Rudolfo Nolli. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ananta_Samakhom_Throne_Hall The mandarin oriental Hotel was also built by foreigners. " Encouraged by Prince Prisdang Jumsai, Hans Niels Andersen formed a partnership with Peter Andersen and Frederick Kinch to build a luxury hotel. Designed by Cardu & Rossi, a team of local Italian architects, the Oriental was the first luxury hotel in Siam. The hotel opened on 19 May 1887 with 40 rooms and features which at the time had never been seen in Siam outside of a royal palace: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandarin_Oriental,_Bangkok But they were wiser and more relaxed times. Roota
The law basically says that as a foreigner you can't hang out a shingle and set up as a freelance architect. But you can certainly work for a Thai firm, which is what happened here. The architect was a German, Ole Scheeren, employed by Pace Development. Seems to me the real story here isn't that some wally just figured out that Maha Nakorn was designed by a non-Thai, but that Pace was willing to hire a foreigner, and that he seems to have done a good job for them. That can only be good news for both architecture and foreign architects in Thailand.
Briggsy
It is easy to mock the complainant. However for me, the real issue is the fact that very strict laws are enacted, many of which are never enforced except when those high up in the power hierarchy are inconvenienced and then the law is enforced vigorously. The cases involving foreigners stuck in Thailand on charges with no basis whilst the interminable criminal process rolls on spring to mind. This patchy and inconsistent rule of law is one of the major reasons that power and wealth are concentrated in the hands of a few and will remain so. Briggsy
Roota is not quite right. The "trick" is to change the job title and job description on the work permit so it doesn't conflict with the prohibitions. The normal way is to add "consultant" after the relevant adjective. So here "architectural consultant". In fact many work permits just say "consultant" as the job title.
SoFarAndNear
4 minutes ago, Father Fintan Stack said: How did he get a work permit if it is an occupation prohibited for foreigners? It is not only foreign owned businesses that cannot set up architecture firms, the actual occupation is prohibited to foreigners! Similar to lawyers and accountants yet there are several foreign lawyers and accountants apparently working legally here also. It's like immigration and the labour dept. honestly don't have a clue about their own laws or the foreigners are working those prohibited occupations and have 'manager' or some other nonsense on their work permits. I'm going for the latter. It like the usual Thai way. Nothing what an brown envelope cannot handle in this country.

Perzactly. Once you're employed by a Thai company, especially someone as big and powerful as Pace, you can do any occupation they want you to do. It's their job to work out the legal niceties. This is in the great Asian tradition of having a set of public rules but behind that a widely accepted system of private arrangements. This seems to bother a lot of Westerners but all I can say is, get used to it, it comes with the territory.

seajae
do you think these idiots will ever wake up to the fact that a lot of the problems they have in Thailand are due to them not allowing non thais to do these things. Lets be blatantly honest, bridges fall down and kill people, houses/building fall down and kill people, none of their building workers have qualifications or have done apprenticeships, they refuse to get help to solve serious crimes so they dont lose face, the list just keeps going on. Thailand is a great place to live but these protectionist laws are absolute bullsh*t and simply cause more problems than they are worth. There is nothing wrong with getting people with a lot more knowledge in certain fields to come here and help, all it does is keep the totally under qualified thais in a job they cant really do properly, the examples are everywhere
