Would you clean it up? Is it your responsibility?

Standing around the mall I observed a well-dressed woman; phone in hand, handbag on arm, shopping bags on the other arm and freshly purchased green tea drink precariously balanced somewhere in between…

In her haste to maybe catch a rare Pokemon or update her Facebook status, the iced tea drink slipped from her grasp, the contents pooling across the tiled floor.

Concern creased her face…concern not for the large mess of iced tea over the ground, but that some iced tea had spilt across her striking heels.

Further consternation covered her face with the realization she had then erred in retrieving the cup from the floor, and now in her hand, she had to dispose of it. It was a close run thing whether or not it would be thrown back into the murky depths of the iced tea or discarded into the open door of some unfortunate shopkeeper. Her friend saved the day, gesturing animatedly towards the escalator and the rare sighting of a mall trash bin.

The woman spilled the drink not more than a dozen steps behind the shop she purchased it. She could have alerted them of the spillage or asked for a towel to cover it up, an obvious slip hazard in a busy mall.

It wasn’t to be…the cup was cast-off to the trash, she and her friend riding up the escalator , not once looking back at the slippery pool of iced tea left behind.
