New Zealand hit by 5.7-magnitude earthquake

Wellington - New Zealand's North Island was struck by a 5.7-magnitude earthquake on Thursday morning, but there were no initial reports of damage.

The country’s earthquake monitoring website GeoNet said the earthquake was centred 100 kilometres off the east coast near the small township of Te Araroa at a depth of 25 kilometres.

The quake hit just after 10am local time (2200GMT Wednesday) and was felt by residents throughout the North Island, including in the capital city Wellington more than 500 kilometres away.

Authorities said there was no risk of a tsunami.
