Taking medicine out of Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi all

Im going on holiday to Thailand next week and want to buy some allopurinol tables ( which are sold in all pharmacys without prescription in Thailand ) and bring them back to the uk . They are cheaper in Thailand and it saves having to get a repeat  prescription in the uk . They are for my own use and the tablets are used to prevent gout. ( nothing  narcotic etc in them ) I did this last year but thought I would check its ok . The U.K. Thai consulate had no idea and said I should try here .

Thanks

Are you sure that you ask the right question?

I have little to no concern that you can take non prescription meds out of Thailand (checked baggage I would suggest).

It is kind of "regular" business for some to take meds from Thailand to the home country.

But: what would UK customs/import control say if they find it?

We (Thai wife and myself) are going to Europe for a Holiday regularly.

We are not bothered what the Thai Customs will do if we take medicine out of Thailand, but what Customs in the Country of Arrival in Europe will do with the Medicine we take with us.

For all the medicine we take with us on these trips we go to a Local Hospital and have the Doctor write us a letter which we show to customs (Arrival Country) and seldom a problem.

Indeed, the issue is not Thai law/regulations but those of the UK.

Afraid I have no information about laws on this in the UK. Suggest you try your luck on UK.gov website.  It has easy to find info on bringing in controlled drugs  there (https://www.gov.uk/travelling-controlled-drugs)

but I don't readily see anything on non-controlled prescription drugs.
