Police are citing doctors at Phi Phi Island Hospital saying that Chinese tourist He Renfu, 66, suffered a pre-existing medical condition that caused him to fall unconscious in the water, ultimately leading to his death. Photo: Phi Phi Island Hospital / Facebook

PHUKET:-- Police have cited an “existing medical condition” as to blame for a 66-year-old Chinese man dying after falling unconscious while swimming with a life jacket on during a boat tour to Phi Phi Island yesterday (Sept 11).

The man, identified as He Renfu, was among 30 tourists on board the Jupiter 2 tour boat, which arrived Ao Sam, Phi Phi Island, from Phuket at about 11:30am, said Phi Phi Police Chief Lt Col Chetthapan Wichaidit.

“The boat captain, Surachai Pramongkij, 37, told us that Mr He went into the water for a swim with his life jacket on,” Col Chetthapan said.

“After five minutes of swimming, the group alerted the captain that one of the tourists had lost consciousness, that Mr Renfu was face down in the water, motionless,” he added.

“They jumped in to help and took him [Mr He] to Phi Phi Island Hospital, but he was pronounced dead a short time later,” Col Chettapan said.

How do doctors think he had a pre-existing condition? He either did or didn't.

Why no attempt to  revive him immediately? I thought they all had to have basic medical training now.

Difficult snorkeling that way.

...When properly attached to the body with the correct buckles clicked in.

Seldom does anyone give instructions on how to properly wear a lifejacket on these jaunts.  I've snorkelled and have ridden public boats for 13 years here, without ever seeing one person instructed as such.  The thing they most seldom do is run the back vertical strap through the groin and buckle it in front---which keeps the lifejacket from slipping off your head in the water--particularly if you've been knocked unconscious as you exited a sinking or overturning boat (a frequent scenario).

I'm just lucky I grew up near the sea and know how to put one on.
