I remember when I was younger, friends of friends would offer to sell notes at a percentage of value.

I wasn't stupid enough to buy any. But as a youngster, the temptation was there.

So the chances are that they didn't make them themselves, but bought them thinking to boost their spending power.

Counterfeiters? I don't think so. Idiots who made a stupid mistake. Most definitely.

Give them a scare, but not ten years.

Sure, young, ignorant and foolish. It's hard to believe some of the attitudes here. I am a great believer that the punishment should fit the crime. In this case the impact on their victims is minimal. Don't give me any crap about money changers doing it tough. While counterfeiting is a serious crime, this is really at the low end of things. The same goes for smoking ganja. Where is the victim in that crime? 

On the other hand you can read in the Bangkok Post today about a Brit in Fang, Chiang Mai who has been given suspended sentences for child offences and child pornography offences. Now that is a crime demanding a long sentence. Those boys should be let off after a good scare, and that maggot should be locked up forever.

The Victim in this crime is almost certainly the low-paid clerk who accepted the fake notes in the Monychanger Booth; there's a very good chance that the owner of the Booth will make the poor girl responsible and insist she repays the amount she was conned into paying out.

Even in lenient UK according to guide lines to Judges it would probably be in the region of a 2 year sentance

If they skipped bail their photographs should now be shown on Thai media, and hopefully the UK media as well.

For those of you who would like to "minimise" this crime you are not living in the real world, in every country counterfeiting is a very serious crime. It strikes at the heart of the financial system and erodes the public trust in their currency, that is over and above the obvious financial loss incurred by the recipients who do not spot the fakes.

These were not "kids" they were mature adults who set out to defraud other individuals without regard to the cost to the others involved, whatever the penalties are they should have been subject to the full weight of the law as a punishment and deterrent to others, nothing else would have sufficed...

You presented a bill you knew was counterfeit. Surprised you weren't immediately arrested. As mentioned, playing around with counterfeit bills is serious stuff, a crime for which there isn't much forgiveness. Iran also has produced US "superbill"s in the past.

Counterfeit bills devalue the currency - it is a crime. However if a currency devaluation is carried out by a government it is known as "quantitative easing" and not a crime
