How about these road signs! -  Bangkok traffic police in new drive to reduce accidents

BANGKOK: -- Police in Bangkok are working hard to reduce accidents and it was all smiles in Hua Mark this morning when a new initiative was introduced.

Traffic cops will be holding up hand held signs to educate the public about their driving habits, reported Daily News.

The one with the motorcyclists joining in with the smiles reminds riders to stay behind the white line to reduce accidents.

While the more somber cop has one reminding motorists not to use their phone to access the internet, play games and chat while driving.

The initiative is the brainchild of Hua Mark police in Bangkok who held a meeting in Ramkhamhaeng yesterday to explain their hands on approach to lowering the death toll on the roads.

The scheme is called "Thanon Khon Dee" in Thai which might be translated as "Roads for Nice Folks".

Spokesman Pornsak Phithakphunsin said that the scheme was to promote understanding and improve driving standards. "We want motorists to think about safety so we can reduce loss of life and damage in accidents 24/7," he said.

While Hua Mark chief Tawat Wongsanga said that the placards were being made at all stations in their jurisdiction.

A couple of meters past the cop and the signs will be forgotten.

All these ideas are for publicity only and are better than doing what's really needed, Enforcement with appropriate punishment but easier to churn out this BS, dress cops up as Care Bears and on and on.

Easier than actually doing the job they're supposed to.

I thought this was Sgt Nop's job? Dummy cops being replaced by dumb cops - clearly there is a demarcation issue at stake here!

If the replacement is more competent than the replaced in being a dummy, no lines are crossed. :passifier:

Yes a brainchild that has inherited trisomy 21 from its progenitor.

Wonder if there's a sign telling all drivers they have to stop, every time, when people are waiting to cross / are crossing at pedestrian crossings?

It quite shocking how juvenile the actions such as these really are...

Pose for a photo, lip service to the press... then forget...  the laws in Thailand are never enforced with any level of effort or consistency...

When I was 10 we had the "Verkehrskasper" come to our school and teach us about traffic- safety with the help of hand- puppets!

Last week it was flags with "Before and After" written on them. This week it is signs on sticks with "Roads for Nice People " written on  them. What will it be next week? My guess is it will be party balloons with an equally meaningless message.

If you like a good laugh tune in for next week's hilarious installment of Bangkok police chiefs puerile attempts to fix Bangkok traffic.

How is anybody supposed to read those signs doing 120kph down the sidewalk?

just do as many other countries in the west have done to reduce the accident.

copy those programs and implement the rules from them

enforce it

and within 5 years you have just a few accidents left.

a few is always to much but better then to pile there is now.

for example the Netherlands has a good experience with bike and car on hight density road and if correct informed the fastest closest car to car at thigh speed road in the world

or in .london to stop the smog or Dusseldorf

remvoe the yellow liine in the middle and make it white you see it much better .

I am not sure the signs will prevent accidents. Acually sounds like a silly idea to me. If you want to teach locals how to drive start with proper education before they get their license.

ah!! I get it now... you have to really really slow down,

just to be able to read the small signs

therefore safer :passifier:

when there's an accident in attendance - the signs change from characters - to numbers

How about cameras that actually work on the roads.  Rapid zero tolerance to prosecute irresponsible drivers.  Confiscation of license and massive fines.  Speed cameras everywhere.

What the hell are more signs going to do - drivers just ignore the ones that are already there.

Brain child! - more like abomination.

We had something similar in England and road safety was regularly on the TV.

Never seen that here.

No point in even discussing law enforcement and real driving tests!

Enforce the laws, and provide real penalties!!!!!!!!!!!  It's basic!!!!!!  Stopping behind the line is not a big issue.  I suppose if 1000 cops get mowed down by trucks and cars, something MIGHT happen!?

The officer bearing the " Don't use your smartphone etc" sign is recovering in hospital suffering from a broken pelvis after being thrown across the bonnet of a Honda Jazz driven by bank teller Tipawan Tatpaiboon who was engrossed in a video of a kathoey singing the " Pen apple pen pineapple" song on her iPhone 6 when he stepped out in the road in front of her.Further injuries were sustained when she ran over him again as he lay on a pedestrian crossing as she was in the process of taking a selfie and posting it on Facebook with the tag " Noo narak mai?" and " liking" her friend's photo of the dessert section of the Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit's Sunday brunch and a video of a poodle riding a child's tricycle.
