Government spokesman defends General Prawit’s Hawaii trip

BANGKOK: -- Government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd led a team of spokesmen from the Defence Ministry and Thai Airways International to defend Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan’s use of THAI’s chartered flight service for the trip to Hawaii to attend the ASEAN-US defence ministers meet during September 29-October 1.

It was alleged that General Prawit’s 38-member delegation spent 20.9 million baht for the trip.

Lt-Gen Sansern said the government had attached great importance to transparency and suppression of corruption. However, he noted that the disinformation about the spending might disappoint many people who had high expectation from the government.

The spokesman said foreign trips whether by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha or any of the deputy prime ministers had to follow the same rule set by the PM’s Office. He disclosed, since taking office about two years ago, the prime minister used chartered fight service twice – a trip to Italy and another trip to Russia while General Prawit used just once – the trip to Hawaii which sparked off the controversy.

He said that even though some of the food in the menu were highly priced, it didn’t mean that Gen Prawit’s team ate the expensive food as they might just eat noodles on board.

that's a communication team....what school of communication did they graduate from? ....really stupid answers......they just ate noodles ? 555555 they are killing me 55555

Funnier still its a charter flight the "expensive" food on board cant be given back its bought and paid for. Ok then lets run with it they only ate mama cup,  cool so food then took up almost zero of the 21 million right. So back to the question minus deflection what was the money spent on? and if that is 21 million just for the flight how much did these pigs drop in total on their 4 day hawaii, strictly business, rort sorry, jaunt. Better yet this goose has dropped the pm right in it as well so lets go back and see the bill for his 2 charter flights because being all above board and transparent should be no problem releasing details of those expenses.

Auditor-General Pisit Leelavachiropas said yesterday that no irregularities had been discovered, adding that his agency would extend its probe and refer the case to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) if members of the public still had doubts about the trip.

and the cover-up begins...

leaches...

THAI bill for Prawit trip in two months - so, Net 60, what a way to run a business (especially where public money is involved) !!!

No doubt, by the time the bill finally is presented, the whole issue will have been well and "truly" resolved by the OAG.

But, the final paragraph from The Nation's article includes a very, very significant word - "...Prawit's delegation was in Honolulu to attend a September 29-October 1 informal meeting between US Defence Secretary Ash Carter and his counterparts from member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations..." !!!

I might book with Thai when I go home at Christmas. Ticket price? Well, we will sort that out later. I apparently just fly first and pay later. When do I have to pay? I got two months, right?

Now the rich elite have the problem of catch-22. Live lavishly off the back of the poor tax payer, but can't show off on social media. I guess the junta thought only they could spy on other people.

An informal meeting but it still justified a large delegation or in other words a great excuse for jumping on the free bandwagon.

Makes the names on the passenger list even more interesting.

Two months !

That's a lot of creative accounting.

Yes, one thing innumerable Thais are well-trained and practised in is creative lying!

After these latest shenanigans, can anyone with a brain bigger than the size of a peanut really believe this bunch are dedicated to the eradication of corruption and the promotion of transparency? The double standards and hypocrisy are just stunning in their audacity.

So 2 months for the bill from the air line,  So that's normal practice for an airline huh???

Well look on the bright side,   this should give em plenty of time for another controversy/cock up to take the publics eye's off them just as this story has done for the PM's lil brother/wife/nephew....

As for "fake flight list" Who attended the junket/meeting,   Wow man that took a couple of day's before protesting "it's fake".

Well sorry fella's the photo's are out there as of a few day's ago.

Then there's the rather sad excuse of the TV presenter that was supposed to be on the flight but they couldn't find a replacement for her so she canceled,  ever heard of pre-recording?    Oooh wait   that photo's also out there...

Now for the  kicker,    The air line provided premium-grade service expensive in flight food/meals/snacks/drinks   at 600,000 baht but they only ate noodles.   Any one who has a problem with that you will find yourself in our military court...........

Just lucky they don't have sim cards that will be tracked like the proposed tourists/falngs/expats or they would have spin some more...

Bloody Thaksin, Yingluk, red shirts,,,,it's their fault,  they just wanna make us look bad.......  When will the junta huggers wake up?

Yes, Thaksin and Yingluck are behind these ridiculous rumours. They must be. Our new leaders are beyond reproach.

By contrast,  not a leaf falls from a tree, a car crashes, or any crime is committed in Thailand without Thaksin being behind it. We know this!

A few interesting facts about the national carrier:

  • The government holds a majority financial stake in the airline.

  • THAI lost over ten billion baht in 2014 and is still thought to be in the red
  • “Political interference, corruption, and abuse of authority have been persistent in THAI’s management” (source: Wikipedia).

None of this, of course, is at all relevant to the outcome of the “inquiry” into that Hawaii junket.

One might wonder how Thai could have quoted profitably for providing the charter, if their costing-systems are so poor, as to need two months after the event to produce the actual itemised-invoice ?

I guess that airline finance-systems must have changed a lot, since my own day.

Two months should be enough time for the dust to settle................and disappear. Just like all of the other high progile cases that we rarely see any coverage updates for.

My wife, friends etc have always been tight lipped about anything to do with the government. Except that now I hear many of them all (albeit quietly) speaking out against the powerful military machine and their lack of affording much if any freedom to the masses. Maybe, just maybe the next generations who are more savvy to the rest of the worlds ways thanks t the internet, will slowly change things whereas Thai's demand more transparency AND  the right to reside in a TRUE democracy.

Just saying...........................

Nothing changes in this country.

Get to the top and drain tax money.

An informal meeting of foreign ministers. 38 people on the entourage?

Hm, wish I knew what the other countries sent.

38 people on a Boeing 747 Jumbo! 11 mio Baht for fuel!

Bangkok - Hawaii is about 10600 km.

Sure not so many planes can do that nonstop, BUT:

is their time so precious that they can not afford a fuel stop at Japan or Korea and use an appropriate plane?

Could cost them an hour or so.

I thought Thai submitted a 'bid' for the trip and the 'government' accepted it. Did I miss something? Of course, since this is a government airline don't let it be construed as insider trading or greasing palms.

I think you didn't.

State airline has to do it.

Anyone questioning the offer keeping tax payers money in mind?

Alternatives?

Sure not.

I would have declined it.

Want an A380

But as Mr. P. promised:

things will change. Corruption will be eradicated in ... 20 years .

we can hope.   It looks like the problem will not be solved by the current generation (I hope that I'm wrong) and then it will be up to our kids.

Of course it is obvious what the problem is, ... and the problem has a lot of guns.
