City Hall reclaims 127 street pavements from vendors

 

 

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has managed to wrestle back 127 trading spots on street pavements in 35 districts from more than 18,000 pavement vendors, Mr Wallop Suwandee, advisory chairman of Bangkok governor, said on Monday.

 

However, he maintained that the City Hall did not just evict the vendors from street pavements, but arranged for new locations for the evicted vendors – although not all of them – so that they could carry on with their business.

 

For instance, the space below Pong Phraram expressway which can accommodate up to 800 stalls have been allocated for evicted vendors from Siam Square shopping district.

 

He noted that the city administration had given reprieve on several occasions to the vendors, but the reprieve came to an end on October 3 as all street pavements in Bangkok were declared off-limits to vendors around the clock.

BMA stands firm on Siam Square footpath vending ban

BANGKOK: -- The ban on stalls on footpaths at Pratunam and Ratchaprasong roads and in Siam Square remains in |effect, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) deputy governor Pol General Assawin Kwanmuang has said.

 

Stall vendors in Siam Square |and the surrounding area who |have been affected by the ban implemented last week have mobbed the BMA to request for the ban to be rescinded.

     Of course will that affect those who already struggle. The city Wrestlers did a great job.

 

I hope that includes all the Arabic shops selling fake Viagra, Valium, Child porn, etc. at Sukhumvit near Nana.

Where do all these vendors now go to eke out a living ? Do they really just get moved to one location? Is there enough demand in the new location they are assigned? Are these the vendors selling t-shirts and DVD's and such?

 

Serious question.

There are many areas in BKK where they are not selling DVDs and Viagra , /.......

 

But normal things people can use everyday , Hats, shirts , ear rings , nail clippers , and all the other small things of life ,

plus of course all the people selling food , drink , ice cream etc......

 

Since they were probably along 10-20 km of streets trying to put them into one area in each area is not going to work ,

 

many of the sales were to people waiting for a bus or taxi , coming out of another business or office building etc ,  those sales are gone,

 

Sorry , maybe they needed to be regulated , but not sent to Siberia !

would seem better to form a balance. designate a set area and allow vendors to rent those areas. used the money to polices the areas. same goes with deck chairs.

After 10pm doesn't matter after my experience this Sunday morning all up and down  Sukhumvit  was died even Soi Nana but Sunday around 12ish noon time was okay seems people prefer to go out in the day less problems but anyway 14 years of  coups and unrest has changed Thailand ..

Jesus, what is wrong with you guys. Clearing out the vendors is not a disaster but a critical factor in protecting pedestrians, especially kids. The customers will survive - human beings are surprisingly resilient (sarcasm alert) - and so will the vendors, all of whom are opportunistic entrepreneurs, of whom many have had to pay big money for their spots and are hardly poor and struggling. For sure there are some who are scratching out a living, but hey, think resilient again, ok! It's not the end of the world for them, especially if they're getting some help.

 

Bangkok is a major metropolis. It's time for it to grow up.

take the $$$$ away from the Police which they have pocketed for decades,

No police or soldiers, just BMA officers and they're not blocking anything, they're making sure the vendors keep away, i.e. doing a good job.

The foot paths look like anybody can pass through how the police have it set up. Try again.
