Fly Screens and security grilles.

we should be moving house next week and the house we might buy has no security grilles or fly screens. I am going to make my own, so my question is does anyone know if fly screens are bought ready made or are they sold to make up. I live near Pattaya, are there any shops that sell the materials to make grilles/screens in the area!

Not in Pattaya, so might be irrelevant.

From my two experiences with installing/reinstalling fly screens, the easy way is to hire someone reliable (yeah, I know...got lucky the second time) and get a custom job. Far as I recall, fly screens came only as part of a whole ready-made window set. Getting the materials separately, and doing it yourself is possible, if you know how - not sure it's worth the trouble, though.

Make sure you got accurate measurements of your windows, railings, etc.

Thanks for the reply, have just been looking on you tube about the screens, if the materials are available here in Thailand, it looks a bit of a doddle. As for the security shuttering I think I could fabricate something to fit the doors and windows, it's just finding the store that stocks the fittings etc.

we live in the sticks and have a handyman who does it for us. We recently got him to put mozzie screens on a few windows. It was 350 per window.... cheap. The security bars are about 2000 for an average size window. Just ask around

Hi, yes I'm quite handy myself, I have an electronic welder and just put up a big carport, so it's something that after years in the mechanical and engineering industries I don't think there would be a problem. It's just finding where I can buy the tracks etc for hanging the doors etc, as for the fly screens a good mitre saw would be usefull, but not entirely necessary, the mesh comes on a big roll and the frame once cut will just snap together (with the fittings of course). I will have to go looking at the big builders merchants, there is a huge one on the back road to Rayong from Pattaya.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you already have an idea about the security grilles?

Wish I had:

Security bars mounted on the inside.

Removable, secured by a mechanism that can not be opened from outside.

The fixed mounted bars are a pain for window cleaning and a security risk if you need to flee through the window (fire etc.).

If only I knew how it can be done.

Yes KB, got some ideas off youtube plus ideas I already have. The ones we have fitted at the house we currently live at were all installed by a guy who professionally does this for a living, and cost an arm and a leg, and wasn't to a good standard to boot. He installed all the bars inside the house which is great if the window is an outward opening one, but for sliding windows it is tricky getting your arms through the bars to slide the window open. So I decided to remove the bars and fit on the outside of the house, a little cutting and welding was needed to ensure correct fitting. As for fleeing from a window, the fire risk must be quite minimal as the house is mostly concrete, however that is still a possibility, so a grille with hinges and deadbolt would be one solution.

Check out this on youtube.
