Holiday - Switzerland early December - where?

I have been to Switzerland twice, and I fell in love with the Lauterbrunnen Valley on my last trip.

For a carefree trip, especially in December, I would use the wonderful railway system to get around. This area is accessible by rail.  You might consider leaving your car at a rail station, somewhere less-likely to be snowed in, and by train visit this valley.

If you are dead-set on not getting involved with snow in December, you might consider staying at several locations around Lake Geneva  (Geneva City or Lausanne).  There, the weather is considerably more moderate.  The mountain views are there, but they are considerably more distant.

Happy traveling!

Depends on what length of detour you accept?

Do you want to overnight and at what price? (I don't have to tell you that Switzerland is about the most expensive country in Central Europe).

And from Nauders to Switzerland there is basically no other choice than passing through Lower Engadine and on to world famous Upper Engadine (St. Moritz).

And what more do you expect than one of the most spectacular views in the Alps?

In Lower Engadine you have some amazing historic mountain villages.

That's a trip easily done in less than half a day with stops and driving slow.

Snow heights on this (southern) side of the Alps are not that high.

A wonderful place, not far: Grindelwald with the view to the Eiger north face.

BUT: the OP has to state how long his Switzerland trip is intended to last.

Just for orientation, Nauders, Munich (Muenchen) and Switzerland (Schweiz).

Bernese Alps (Lauterbrunnen) is about in the center of the right ellipsoid.

The route is the one to St. Moritz (where the rich and the beautiful are )

Thanks guys - will be taking TG to Zurich and then Munich back to BKK

Heading west from Zurich not preferable cause will need to back track later.

We usually plan less than 100km per day driving , and if snowing , maybe less. Will be having a friend and his wife in tow, and they are not the train types

Does not have to be Nauders, but basically want to head east from Zurich and see some lovely mountains, and pass Garmishe- Partiinkirchen on way to Munich

We passed Oberammergau last time and loved it

Lauterbrunnen? Every time I went there, I started to suffer from Claustrophobia. Located in a narrow valley, the mountains raise vertically skywards. No horizon, little sunshine. A perfect place to produce movies, having something to do with "Apocalypse".

A hundred places more attractive than Lauterbrunnen. (Too numerous to list.).

One thing remains, no matter where you go = EXPENSIVE !
Cheers.

Ah, apparently you never got out of the valley itself.  Sure, stay there if you like sitting in cafes and shopping for souvenirs.  Or watching an Apocaplypse movie being produced. All that stuff I could do in Seattle.  :sleepy:

The real attraction is the mountains and high meadows ringing the valley.  I spent all my time hiking the multitude of mountain trails and little alpine villages/settlements above the valley itself.  Several spectacular rides are available  (cog railway or gondola) to the top of the two majestic peaks on either side the of valley---Jungfrau and Schitlhorn.   The rides to the peaks can be done any time of year.  For the hiking part, you'll need your snowshoes in December.

Ok - kinda final route planned

Need to check temp so we don't get snowed in, but seems the only decent route - want to do max about 120 km / day

Looking at your map reminded me of the Easter weekend I spent at lake Konstanz many years ago. You really shouldn't miss it if you are passing that close.
