Aussies behaving badly: number of Australians arrested and hospitalised overseas soars

unfortunately there are always the idiots from every country that give the rest of their country a bad name, Australia is no different. As an aussie I see the faults a lot, too many like to drink in excess and make total fools of themselves but then so do the poms, yanks, kiwis,  ruskies etc. Admittedly when I was young I probably want much better but I did travel overseas and do it like all these idiots do, thank god the full moon bash's are on hold for the next 12 months, will stop a lot from belittling themselves.

As pointed out by several replies to this topic Julie Bishop must be illiterate because the figures she quoted were dead wrong and made the Aussies look worse than they were. But you so called expats were soon to jump in and rubbish the Aussies. I was born in the UK and have lived in Aussie and New Zealand so I know first hand who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Any Aussie that misbehaves is most likely of mid eastern heritage, the Aussies falling foul of the law in China would most likely be of Chinese origin and the Aussies getting into trouble in the USA would be the dregs of Australia. You <deleted> should learn not to believe everything you read.

Well Id say you did a very good job at saying you are better than most other Australians.

Aussies getting in trouble in the USA are the dregs of society? Another pretty good way of saying the only people that would want to come over to the US are dregs.

I mean your whole post is you saying how you are better than everyone else.

In my experience - Brits are arrogant snobs and Australians are fun loving jokesters but lose their shit if they drink too much.

Bali is a good example of Australian Tourists and Alcohol.

...spot on article. I had no idea the Auzzie Embassies were getting overloaded with work from their tribe. I think it is something that is obvious living in Pattaya. About 7 years ago---I used to be friends with about 8-10 Auzzies. Then I noticed something: Their toast ALWAYS falls butter-side-up. In misunderstandings---never their fault. In 2009, I did a Vientiane Visa run and traveled on Louang Prabang. Handwritten signs all over Laos "Auzzie Man Go AWAY."

I have since trimmed my ranks of Auzzie acquaintances. D'oh---do most people remember that Australia was used a penal colony by the British Empire? The fruit doesn't fall from the tree. Google up bad Auzzie behaviour in Bali. They are the New Ugly Americans.

I recently spent a month in Laos and didn't see any of these 'Auzzie man go home' signs! I think you're making it up. Of course, I am an Aussie and therefore pretty keen to have my toast fall butter-side up. Aren't we all?

I never visit Bali. Too many Aussies there in 1981 so I never returned. Even I know where to draw a line with my own kind. Luang Prabang didn't seem to attract the same type of Australian you find on Kuta Beach. Pattaya probably doesn't contain the creme de la creme of Aussie men. You don't find the same level of ugliness wherever you go.

A couple of hundred yeinrs ago they invited them in. Now,a nthey're expoidting them. Guess it's a case of taking the basic model and improving it - it's called value added. Aussie galahs! You're champions. You won't win on Saturday, though.

Maybe If other countries stats were revealed, they'd show similar numbers, corrected for per capita of course.

I often wonder If there should be an IQ test prior to a person leaving his home country.

I've traveled overseas more than a hundred times In 40 years and NEVER even come close to being arrested or charged.  That tells me a lot about the Idiots who are.

I think the government should be charging for consular services, no pay and you rot In a foreign jail.

I'm sick to death, as a taxpayer, of funding morons who don't know how to conduct themselves.

".... In total, consular officials dealt with 15,740 cases arising from 10.2 million international departures, or about 43 a day..... "

So appx 0.15% of all departures have issues? Doesnt sound so bad.

Just a cost of doing business it seems. More money is probably spent on vehicular incidences in our home country in less time.

Isnt it great that as soon as we leave home we are virtually disowned by our govt?

But if you look at the figures closely I think we are being racially profiled in the USA. Out ranks Thailand.

What a nerve we Aussie travelers have to expect our govt to give us help if in distress.

Nope once you have paid the big dollars for a passport you are out on your own.

I am glad I have never needed their help because I would not want to ruin the champagne trails afternoon tennis match at the Australia club where those Aussie Diplomats and Govt officials use tax payers money to live a high life and look down on any unfortunate Aussie who may need a helping hand.

True Australian Mateship at its best.

We all know the purpose of an embassy is just to spy on other countries and be used as a travel agent for the Ministers like Ms Bishop.

The self called elites like Bishop don't like spending our taxs on the plebes.More in their pockets for sure.

Nobody has yet mentioned "Bogans". As an Anglo-Canadian, I believe the term is equivalent to the honorific,  "Chav" given to Englishmen.

Perhaps if there is a member on this forum who is also a member of either subculture, they can clarify this information.

I.m not sure if Americans & Canadians have yet developed such a similar creature

Bogans are Australian or New Zealanders of low class, uncouth, badly dressed and usually live in the outer suburbs of cities where they go un noticed because of the other residents demeanour.

Thank you for your reply. Are you chav or bogan by preference?;)

A bogan is as described above. The loose American translation would be redneck ( but the Australian version , although offensive in many ways, does not have a selection of guns, intimate relations with close relatives , a flag flying in the garden and generally no "rip 'yer throat out" dogs.

I read all this BS from you 'contributors' talking about s..t that happened hundreds of years ago. The entire US is made up of Immigrants, every single one of them has a History from somewhere else, Australia and many other Countries are no different.

At least the Australian Government has the BALLS to publish the good with the bad. Nothing new to any other Australian out there. However I have said this many time here before, the MORON button gets pressed as soon as the Visa is stamped at Customs for many foreigners. Just stick your head out your door, you don't have to look far to see Aussie (and others) stupidity. Maybe it's you too, reading this, riding your scooter without a helmet, speeding, driving drunk, abusing the locals, complaining about prices, disrespecting cultures etc.

The Indonesians hate Australians too but put up with the 'Schoolies' and 'Footy Club' getaways for the money. Make no mistake about it, behind every smile is a thought "look at this freakin tosser, how much can I take from this sucker" Sad but true.  As an expat for over a decade you learn this quickly and accept it's the way it works.

Interesting they didn't do the figures on the Australian deaths overseas. Thailand is number 1 for Australian deaths outside its borders. Same with the Brits I hear. Oi, Oi, Oi

Someone once told me that Australia was a classless society :)  right on, no class whatsoever !

There is more culture in this cup of yogurt I am eating than the whole of australia put together. Someone once said that. Please I didn't say that.

A little forethought and respect would be appreciated please. My great, great, great grandmother was one of the first 300 white women in Australia on the first fleet. To feed her family she stole 5 shillings [50 cents] of goods. For that she was transported. This was the case for nearly all convicts. Any person who committed a real crime was executed.

Go g. g. g. granny, you are my hero.

They were still hanging people at that time for stealing a loaf of bread when they were starving or daring to protest against slave like working conditions for a pittance at the whim of their "betters".

However, that's history. Aussies are having a bad run at the moment, bikers, yuppie prats in Malaysia, usual aggro in Bali etc. But the focus will shift to another country as it always does. Whereas the reality is these are small percentages of total travelers. But hey, whether it's Aussie or anywhere else, can't have those poor consular wallahs overworked now can we.

Whereas Americans are all well educated good mannered gentlemen and ladies who respect all other cultures as equals and treat then with reference.

There, I've added to your little fantasy world.

Binge drinking lies at the bottom of the ugly Australian.

Most young men and women when they are not sloshed do not have the courage to misbehave so blatantly.

It is when they get together and want to see who can drink the most that they seem to believe that normally unacceptable behaviour is just good fun.

Fair point. Plenty of examples on Youtube of Australians, British and Americans getting well oiled and then trouble kicks off. Must be something in the genes. I've never seen such behavior on a regular basis as this in Germany, France or Netherlands. The Scandinavians are the booziest IME but have a good time with it, no violence.

Booze has a lot to answer for.

Sorry if anyone thought I was being an arrogant Kiwi. I love Aussies, I really do, but they are a cross we have to bear as part of the Pacific brotherhood. The fact that I spent a decade-and-a-half of my otherwise valuable adult life in Australian gave me a great insight into the Australian mind -- actually, I didn't need 14 years and 11 months of that time, but it wasn't polite to leave any earlier as 15 years was the general sentence for stealing a loaf of bread, and I wanted to show some comraderie.

Enjoy the rugby on Saturday night.

Phew, i was starting to get depressed at the 1,551figure. 15,740 sounds much more impressive, you can't keep a good yobbo down.  Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!

As the article says once you run afoul of the local laws there is not much they can do for you and by the way who bought the ticket you arrived on I bet it wasn't the government but have a few problems and your singing the blues. I have a few aussie friends in CM but they go the other way when they see the misbehaving countrymen and ladies
