Where can I buy nice bedside tables in Pattaya?

Been looking around for a couple of nice bedside tables, but all I've seen is melamine (veneered chipboard), shoddy, overpriced junk. Really, 2,500 baht for a veneered chipboard bedside table? I know I shouldn't compare, but shops that specialise in solid pine furniture abound in Australia, and a nice bedside table might set you back $100, but I've seen nothing here that comes close in quality or value. Why? If any furniture is made here, why is it so expensive in relation to living costs?

Hardwood like teak or rosewood is popular here and more expensive. You might try Chic Republic but their less expensive products will probably be veneers too.

I also have seen the most appalling rubbish here in the way of furniture. Badly made from very cheap materials yet vastly overpriced.

You're right, good bedside tables are hard to find.  Most of Index's I find are too low, too small, and the styles are rather limited.  Chic Republic has a better selection but, as an earlier poster noted, the quality might not be good enough for what you are looking for.  To get what I want, I have mine custom made. You might try one of the local furniture makers--there are some on Thepprasit Road.

I can't remember the exact price,  but we had ours custom made.  Nice veneer over hardwood.  2 or 3k Baht or so.  3 drawers.

Why would you need a veneer over solid wood?

It's a teak wood type veneer over a solid wood frame. The wood frame is just basic wood. Not pressed wood type stuff that falls apart in our humid weather. I'm probably not explaining it very well!

The shop in the car park at Big C Pattaya Klang sells good quality furniture (dark wood....solid)

 

We bought 2 three drawer bedside cabinets, he was asking about 5,500 each but as it was 9pm he discounted to 9,500 for the two.

 

As mentioned by others there is lots of composite c--p being offered for 3,500 up

 

A really nice genuine guy (and his lady assistant)

I know the place outside Homeworks on Sukhumvit sells a lot of teak, but I can't place where you are talking about. Do you mean the undercover car park, because I can't recall seeing a furniture shop there.

There use to be a store or two on Theppraist near Suk that had some really nice solid wood furniture.

The shop Is located between the the two entrances, adjacent to to entrance with the Homepro banner (right hand side)

 

in the West we would probably refer to it as a stall

 

all the same they are very professional......

 

by the way the cabinets appear to have a french polish finish

Had a look yesterday and admit they look very nice. Only one thing lets them down, poorly fitted drawers. The drawers need to be on ball bearing runners (not expensive), instead of wooden glides. The drawer falls out and down when extended, not what I'd expect in a 5200 baht bedside table. The guy said they can install the steel runners for an extra 200 baht a pair, that's an extra 1200 baht for 2 x 3 drawer tables.

What I want to know is, how come a bedside table of a similar size, made of oak, sells for around the same price in the UK? In fact, the one I pictured at the top, sells for 99 pounds or just over 4000 baht. Beats me why furniture is so expensive here.

At the back of each drawer is a swing latch which stops the drawer from coming out in normal us......and gives the benefit of full removal if required.....

 

wooden glides are fine if candle grease is applied

Sorry, these drawers were just sloppy, not a good fit at all. When they were pulled out the front of the drawer dropped considerably. I worked in the joinery trade for years, so I know a badly fitted drawer when I see one.

Most things cost way more than they should here. Presumably this is why so many people seem to sit around all day in shops selling nothing: one sale is enough.

In America oak is common as are other woods (pine , walnut, maple ). Imported furniture must pay a high duty, that's why imported cars here are prohibitively expensive . Look for a native wood , maybe rubberwood .

Giddyup was surely comparing furniture made from local hardwoods in the two countries.

The bedside tables I looked at were in fact rubberwood, made in Thailand, so I was comparing oak and rubberwood, but not saying one was better than the other. With labour costs in Thailand at least 1/10th of the UK, I just wondered why a similar item should cost more.

Maybe, but it still begs the question why are so many things so expensive and such poor quality here?

 

When I get the air-con repair people in they do a very mediocre job with few if any proper tools, but at least it's cheap.

Yes, the labour is cheap, but you don't always get a good job. I have had my 3 aircons regassed at least 3 times each in 6 years, the roof still leaks when it was supposed to be fixed, have an electric short when a set of lights is turned on that were supposed to be fixed, etc, etc. That's why I questioned the price of the bedside tables. The wood is grown locally, and is not an exotic timber, the labour is local, so how can the tables cost more than the equivalent product does in the UK?

Indeed. As I mentioned, the only reason I can think of is they are being sold with a massive mark-up by people who expect to earn a day's income by selling one item of furniture, and are prepared to sit around doing nothing the rest of the day.

haven't read all the posts.  For what it's worth we bought very satisfactory wood side tables (mortise & tenon drawer joints, good rollers etc) in the roadside furniture shop on left going south directly  before Floating Market.  About B3k each i recall.  Doesn't look much from outside but definitely worth checking out what's inside

Is that "real" hardwood or just the nasty red-stained softwood that one sees in a lot of roadside places?
