yellowboat
A step in the right direction. How about the devices that use the Internet. What operating system will they run ? One that is easy to use and costs very little like Ubuntu or Mint.

Alive
So many large scale tech projects like this fail because they lack technical support after the initial installation. The private sector can solve this problem. My guess is certain people are going to make a lot of money on this and the rest will be waste. How many schools are using those free tablets that were given to kids? The are all probably sitting in a closet somewhere if they weren't stolen. Take the big brother Internet police into account too and there you have it...Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect
Shaunduhpostman
The "watchdog's telecom company, eh? ...well, at least they are spelling it out plainly in terms of what or whoever it is provides the internet intends to do, but who or what the "watchdog" is, it seems, is being left open to speculation. I was under the impression that generally watchdog organizations keep tabs on governments, I guess now the tables have been turned. Or perhaps the "watchdog" is simply a powerful and avid watch collector who wishes to remain anonymous for the time being.

anotheruser
When I was in Laos I was the first to bring in internet and gadgets to the island I lived on. To this day I have not seen them do one worthwhile thing with the technology. If you want to make your work force even more unproductive then they currently are give them internet, smart phones and iPads. Aside from that it isn't necessary here in the third world people don't really need home connections. They all have a mobile and 3G is pretty much everywhere these days. Developing countries are going to be the first to pretty much skip the PC era and go straight to portable mobile solutions. It is already happening, you go on the BTS and you see everybody has a phone but what percentage even bother with a laptop or desktop at home? My guess is very few you don't need those to do FB. If you just want to "play" internet you don't need a real computer or fast broadband connection. I am sure a few Farang will be looking forward to this. Although 3G works usually it is limited data so I could see some people out in the sticks rejoicing over this.

Most people, and I do mean most as it seems to be getting past 50% and therefore a majority, walk around like zombies staring at their device. Totally oblivious to the world around them. Not looking up important facts to make a big investment decision, not doing their homework, not working on their job. Just keeping their minds buzzing, which many studies have shown to be very bad for the brain. The brain needs some quiet time. To me, they are all low level junkies, and getting hooked more and more every day. Not to mention the money they are costing themselves as they keep buying minutes, and gigabytes. burgdawg
...it'll never happen. Why? It just won't. Yes, there will tons of meetings, studies and this is where the real money will be made---politicos in BKK "earnestly working hard for the rural areas." If this plan goes through and anything is built----it will benefit an area already super-saturated by WiFi coverage. No ulterior motives....just the way Thailand works. Wake me up in 15-20 years when coverage as proposed is extended to 5% of the project's goal. The deal is thus: linearity and task completion isn't an Asian thing at all. I am convinced that The Nation publishes these articles for humoring the falangs.

I live in rural Thailand close to the Mae Wong national park and 2 guys came along yesterday running a fibre optic cable for 3BB. You may need to wake up earlier than you think. MJCM
Maybe but... I just searched for info on Wimax and got nowhere, Who's providing it and how do I find out the coverage? It's called WiNet and not WiMax and is provided by TOT, go to the local office and they will tell you if it's available. You will got a tower (concrete pole) in your garden (mine is 17 mtr high) and will receive a signal a couple of kms away (distance and height of tower depends of course). Max current speed is 10 Mb, down and 1 Mb up. Price per month is 6xx THB and installation cost (in my case) were 17xxx THB.
