Why so high is the price of beef in Thailand.

In only one year the price of ground beef per kilo went from 150 Baht to 750 Baht, why?  The EU is hesitating in signing a trade pact with Canada saying that the price of beef is already too low, in France notably, in order to protect the local beef producer, they do not want more beef coming from Canada.

Why beef is so expensive in Thailand while being too low in EU?

Dunno, but probably same reason shaving foam, cheese and many other things are... tax I expect. My shaving gel in the UK (which is probably manufactured here or elsewhere in Asia) works out about 50 baht (30 baht special offer). Here it is 200 baht for the same only 50% smaller. Don't get me started on bread, wine, pizzas, quality fruit & salad-stuffs etc. Not knocking ole Muang Thai, but if I could have a Sainsbury's here with UK prices (Tesco Lotus lol), I'd be as happy as a pig in ***t. :whistling:

I haven't noticed a 500% increase in the price of beef (or things made from it like restaurant hamburgers or steaks) in the past year. Are you sure your figures are correct or is this just another wildly exergerated woe-is-me life in Thailand wind-up post?

OP: what beef are you writing about?

Yes, local beef has increased in price over the years.

But not that fast and to that level.

Rib eye on our local market is 350 nowadays (or is it 400 already?).

Much too expensive for many locals.

And a number of Thais don't eat beef anyway.

Why it has become so relatively expensive?

Not sure. Here many farmers have sold their herds as the feeding grounds have been converted to sugar cane. Sugar cane, sugar cane and no end. I am afraid it will be another hard landing.

Buying fodder seems uneconomic?

Imported beef is much more expensive.

I see prices in the 2xxx range.
