a taxi cost me 100 bahts from mo chit to Don Muang.

it's a trip of 20 or 25km than can take over 30 minutes.

stuck in traffic it's still the same price.

in Europe, I m at 70 euro. take a taxi in Germany, Switzerland or Austria ... see your money flying away in no time.

what about movie theatre(called cinema in europe) how much it cost in the states? 15$?

here in Pattaya 130 bahts.

mo more fun in the West. people are broke anyway.

Thailand much cheaper indeed, just stay off the import / expensive stuff...  ( no problem, since this is the reason why we came here right ? )

Bottle of wine ? Just as happy with my sang som coke (and cheaper )

Thai built performance motor ?  The new Honda Civic turbo, drives better than my old gti's and bmw's ( and is cheaper than in Europe ).

Petrol.. cheaper.   Insurance..  cheaper.   Rent... about 25% of what I paid in Europe.

Great Thai food everywhere...

The European missus had much more expensive dining and shopping habits than my Thai missus.

Ok let's see if the expensive cheese and salami eaters have anything more interesting to bring...

Buy a Thai built motor and there will be no import tax....Maybe you love BMW but compromise is a great thing...

The problem with that theory is that high duties and taxes on imported products allow the local manufacturers to jack their prices up because they can still be competitive at ridiculously high prices for their product.  Locally made cars are cheaper than a BMW, but still a lot more expensive than an equivalent product back home.

Which is what the OP is comparing, right?  Not just cars, all products with high import fees.  Food, wine, cars, you name it.

Even if you live by Western Standards, Thailand is considerably

less expensive than The West.  I have a very nice 87 sq meter

apartment, ( I do not live in a tiny one room studio, again, you

compare "Standard of Living".. I enjoy Thai food, dining out is

80% cheaper than the U.S..  Cabs, and The Bus to BKK is 90%

cheaper.  My compromise is a motorbike around town, not much

of a compromise,. I do cook my steaks and hamburgers on the

grill at home.  When it's hot I always use the A/C, electric bill

never exceeds 2200B. Again 30-40%cheaper.  In the past six

years I have spent less than $600 on medical, dental, and new

glasses.  I am healthy and exercise and try to eat healthy.  In

the U.S. My medical deductible,co-payments, would have been

in the Thousands of dollars for the same medical bills.

Internet here is $19/ mo. U.S. $39.99+, Cable TV $49, U.S.

$79.99 cellular for my IPad 220B U.S. $29.  My rent here

is 13000 B, compared to a beach community in U.S.(Florida)

$1200-1400.    A considerable savings.

Here I have a lady to clean and do laundry  3 X per

month,  I pay Her 2400B per month, in Florida it

would cost 12000B

I enjoy Thailand, of course no place is perfect, and

I feel I have the same "Standard Of Living" for half

the cost of living in the West.

Show me a Thai Built Performance Motor.

Show me a road in Thailand where it is safe to use one.  Also a taxi to the airport in any country is more or less a necessity not a luxury, unless you have friends to drop you there or the country has shuttle  services.  People who, live here because of the cost of necessities are less than than in the west (rent, basic food, cost of health insurance against what you pay at home in health insurance or taxes for the same) are not going to be buying new Beemers.  More likely a Toyota Vios or a Nissan March.   Made here no import tax.

Thailand is a country that has lots of cash day labour not paying PAYE (Pay as you earn) earnings tax.  The import duties and VAT are very important to the exchequer.   When it becomes "civilised" like Germany, USA or Australia, with universal earnings taxation, import duties will remain.

So you can't show me a Thai Built Performance Motor?

When you do your cost comparison, don't forget to add a few international trips a year if you happen to like snow skiing, watching the autumn leaves turn, fly fishing in streams, professional baseball or football games, or even visiting the family back home.

Of course, if I had no legacy hobbies and didn't like the family enough to miss them, cost of living wouldn't be my biggest lament.

Or a bottle of wine and brick of cheese

Imported

Imported in most countries of the world.

President Camembert 250gr is imported in my home country, and cost 1.45 Euro = 56 Baht, in Big C extra it is sold at 515 Baht.

A bottle of French, Italian, German or actually almost every wine is also imported in my country, but cost a third of here.

Oh yes we do.

Milk produced in Thailand more expensive, as does yoghurt produced in Thailand.

Potatoes grown in Thailand, more expensive, as are tomatoes grown in Thailand.

Pork meat more expensive in Thailand, however the costs to farm porks are much lower. No heating needed in Thailand.

Clay roof tiles, produced in Rayong, about 5 times the price for the exact same tile in Europe.

The only thing that is cheaper in Thailand is crap quality items, crap quality labour and crap quality food.

The Thai food you can eat cheap would not be allowed to be served to animals in the west, but hey if you like to eat it here, it's your choice.

If you go to a decent Thai restaurant, where hygiene and service standards are comparable with the west, you pay western prices as well.
