Satun official gets 22 years’ jail over Rohingya camp
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Appeals Court has delivered a guilty verdict and handed down a lengthy prison sentence for a former member of the Satun Provincial Administration Organisation who played a role in detaining and extorting Rohingya victims.

The court jailed Anat Hayeemasae for 22 years and six months.

Anat was convicted of kidnapping Rohingya people who were forced to live in a border camp under his control until their relatives paid ransoms.

"who played a role"  Who were the masterminds ?  A certain police investigators knows, but he ran for his life to Australia. Would love to see trials in the Hague regarding this.  Certain Thais may never be able to leave Thailand again.

What about the guy in charge Abhisit Vijjavija, the PM at that time, fully aware and responsible for all actions at that time including leaving boats at sea with no provisions.  It's always the underlings that eat the bullet!

If Yingluck is being held responsible for the rice scam  why isn't he being held responsible for the hundreds of deaths that he caused?

Trafficking "kingpin" Lieutenant-general Manas Kongpan was arrested by the military in July 2015. Prayut oversaw Manas' promotion but apparently was unaware of Manas's trafficking activities.  Manas remains the only senior military officer (several mid-level army officers also have been arrested in 2015) charged with complicity in people smuggling, something that has raised eyebrows among human rights groups and observers who say it is unlikely such an influential officer would have acted alone.

To date no prosecution nor court martial has occured for any military officer.

Nice summary.  Does anyone know what happened to Manas?  Is he in custody or discretely living the good life somewhere?

Just about the stupidest thing I have heard in a long time.

First of all, the obvious answer is that this was not a government policy!!!

This was going on long before the Abhisit Gov was in power and it goes on all over the world!!

I guess if you killed someone then the leader of whatever country you were in at the time should be held responsible??

Try and think before you waste your time writing such a ridiculous post.

Was this done only for show that they (you know who) are doing their job? He could have not done this alone. Who are the many others involved? Are there BIGGER FISH and are being protected? Fishy fishy fishy...

I liked his post and so did many others. You've got your opinion and he's got his  no need for the rant.

Probably to be pardoned within 2 years.  None of the victims were Thais.

Unfortunately you could be right.  After the govt pardons of sentence length (i.e, reducing the prison term) which the govt usually gives yearly combined with sentence reduction due to good behavior,  he will not serve anything close to 22 years.  My guess would be 7 years max.   Hard to serve really long sentences in Thailand unless it was a truly hideous crime and/or got a lot of public attention which continued on.

Also the Big Guy, traditionally, does a few pardons every year on his birthday.  Who knows, as a celebration of the grand changes the entire prison system may be emptied of Thai inmates.  If really generous all foreign inmates may be sent back to their home countries.
