The NY Times is a public company.  And controlled mainly by members of one family.  Who do you think "owns" the Times?  Definitely not Carlos.

Mr. Slim is the NYT's largest shareholder at 17%. The Sulzberger family owns a combined 13%.

But doesn't have a controlling share.  Some 17%.  A fair amount for sure, but he's not the one controlling the Times.

Quote

On January 20, 2009, The New York Times reported that its parent company, The New York Times Company, had reached an agreement to borrow $250 million from Carlos Slim, a Mexican businessman and the world's second richest person,[67] "to help the newspaper company finance its businesses".[68] The New York Times Company later repaid that loan ahead of schedule.[69] Since then, Slim has bought large quantities of the company's Class A shares, which are available for purchase by the public and offer less control over the company than Class B shares, which are privately held.[69] Slim's investments in the company included large purchases of Class A shares in 2011, when he increased his stake in the company to 8.1% of Class A shares,[70] and again in 2015, when he exercised stock options—acquired as part of a repayment plan on the 2009 loan—to purchase 15.9 million Class A shares.[69] As of March 7, 2016, Slim owned 17.4% of the company's Class A shares, according to annual filings submitted by the company.

This is a must watch.  Wow.  Scary and shows why Trump is doing what he's doing.  Trying to protect himself from all this coming out.  Unreal.

If this leads back to Trump he's a dead man walking. The Clintons could survive something like that but not Trump.

It's heartening that the excellent and brilliant new DNC chairman TOM PEREZ is explicitly trying to channel the anti-trump RESISTANCE (by name) in his worthy efforts to rebuild the democrat party. He gets it. This is the democrat's version of the tea party but the tea party was reactionary, the resistance is PROGRESSIVE.

I did find it interesting that in his acceptance speech he didn't speak of impeachment, but acknowledged the probability that we are stuck with the trump the full four year term. I don't think that means he's ruling out impeachment, but that really isn't his role. His role is rebuild the party from the ground up and start winning more races at EVERY level.

Rachel Madcow thinking she's a journalist. :cheesy:

In 1994, Maddow received a bachelor's degree in public policy from Stanford University. After graduation she moved to San Francisco and became an activist for the AIDS organization ACT UP. Her work earned her a Rhodes Scholarship, making Maddow the first openly gay U.S. resident to win the award. Maddow applied her scholarship toward attending Oxford University, where she obtained her doctorate in political science.

So you think trump is a loving father and husband?

Yes, trump family values. Trophy foreign brides (under his current rules, Melania would have been DEPORTED). Multiple divorces. Infidelity. Russian waterworks. Trailer (p----y) grabbing. Multiple sexual harassment charges. Multiple appearances in soft core pornos. The fundamentalist Christians love him! Go figure.

Robert Littell wrote an intesting article about Trump ( A trainee president immersed in a nest of spies)  in Haaretz 18th february issue  but I can't fing a link in English to share here.

It's about how US spies already have started to react to Trump's insults.

The article begins with Churchill's words  about Russia in 1939 " a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma", and defines Trump as Something like " "The denial, enveloped in resentment within a blinding anger,"

perhaps someone read the article too?...

I agree 100% but not that that is what they are doing. To have credibility and TRUST from the public they must be squeaky clean and not show bias. Much of the public do not trust the media because it is patently obvious that they manipulate the truth - not all of them but enough to make it count.

To whatever degree the public don't agree that the main media is trustworthy, is a direct result of Trump and his insiders' campaign to bash the media.  They do it every day, repeatedly.  Despots and dictators from many countries do similar - and have been doing so for 150+ years.  Sometimes, like Russia, the top banana arranges for a pesky reporter to be killed.  Other times, like strongmen from Venezuela, N.Korea, Serbia, China, Burma, Sudan, and dozens of other corrupt countries:  they simply shut down independent press corps.   Trump is headed down that ugly slope.   There's a bad moon arisin'.

There's so much stuff coming out, I feel like I need a spreadsheet to keep track of everything.

That's part of Trump and Bannon's stategy:  Create a blizzard of stories, so that the general public can't focus on any one thing, and/or on what's most important.  When a baboon attacks a flock of flamingos, all the flamingos take to the air.  It's mega confusing, and makes it difficult for the ape to focus on one bird to kill.

I was discussing politics with a Trump fan who is a friend of mine.  After a little while, I was putting forth facts which proved what a turd Trump is, and my friend threw up his arms and shouted, "It's all bs.  All politicians are corrupt."    You see, that's the sort of response Trump is aiming for.  He wants all Americans to throw up their hands and yell, "Everything's crazy. I don't know what to believe any more!"    Then Trump wins, because there's not enough focus on important issues like; how deeply Trump and his people were conspiring with the Russkies to influence the election campaign in T's favor.  ....and Trump's taking a dump on the 1st Amendment.

The First 100 Lies: The Trump Team’s Flurry Of Falsehoods

The president and his aides succeeded in reaching the mark in just 36 days. (sub-title)

"To say that President Donald Trump has a casual relationship with the truth would be a gross understatement."

"He has repeatedly cited debunked conspiracy theories, pushed voter fraud myths, and embellished his record and accomplishments."

"All presidents lie, but lying so brazenly and so frequently about even silly factoids like his golf game has put Trump in his own category."

"President Donald Trump will address the nation on Tuesday night saddled with the lowest approval ratings of any new chief executive in modern American history, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll shows."

White House reverses on Trump's golf game

"President Donald Trump played a full round of golf Sunday, enjoying once again a habit he regularly assailed Barack Obama for."

"After initially saying Trump had only played a few holes, the White House reversed itself Monday after professional golfer Rory McIlroy posted on his website that he had played 18 holes with the president."

"Trump regularly panned Obama for his penchant for hitting the links, but Trump made it to the golf course far faster

than the previous two presidents, waiting just two weeks before playing his first round."

Navy secretary nominee withdraws

President Donald Trump's nominee for Navy secretary, Philip Bilden, has withdrawn his name from consideration.

Seems that it is getting even harder for the Donald to fill the 650 key appointments that need urgently filling.

From your link above , thanks for sharing :

Trump does not only cheat ... Trump made him a dues-paying member of one of his clubs without his knowledge.

From your link above " Last week or so, I actually got a bill from Trump National Golf Club," Jackson said. "And I haven't been there in four or five years, so I had my assistant call. They said it was for membership dues. And I said, 'I'm not a member,' and they said, 'Yeah, you are -- you have a member number.' Apparently he'd made me a member of one of his golf clubs, and I didn’t even know it! ... I'm not payin' that!"

So great!

RegretrumpZIT (sic)

Middle American style.

Coastal "elites" knew that would happen.

Sooner AND Later.

Too bad they didn't ask the coastal "elites" about why they knew that before they did.

Sometimes coastal "elites" can be useful to listen to. Geez, they might just KNOW something.

Such as facts like trump is a CON MAN explaining why he got only a tiny portion of votes in his HOME CITY.

Knowing stuff is GOOD.

Just might prevent people from doing stuff that deeply goes against their own self interest that they will live to REGRET.

Bad, very REGRETTABLE stuff like voting for trump. Oh well!

trump voters ... some of them I assume are good people. Maybe some of them will learn a harsh lesson from their MISTAKE and get it together next time.

That is, of course, if a democracy still exists after trump gets done with his dark white nationalist authoritarian Bannonesque agenda.

Dubya weighs in:

George W. Bush opens up on Trump's war with the media, travel ban, Russia and veterans

"We need an independent media to hold people like me to account," Bush told TODAY'S Matt Lauer.

"He noted he spent a lot of time during his two terms trying to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to embrace an independent press."

"It’s kind of hard to tell others to have an independent free press when we’re not willing to have one ourselves," he said."

Considering the similarities and differences between autocrats Putin and trump.

For Russians, it's too late to resist Putin.

Hopefully, for Americans, it is NOT too late.

The pushback has been proportional. Stop being so hysterical.” But we can’t stop being hysterical and he can’t stop being hysterical. Everybody is hysterical, and hysterical is the new normal.
