I disagree with the notion that general comments should be taken personally and that subsequent personal attacks against the commenter are somehow justified and not personal.  It is one thing to say you are not fond of stupid people but something very different to call a person stupid to their face.  General is okay in my book but personal is not.

VF,

I agree. I think far too many people react to a general comment. Not sure why they would take it that the comment was about them unless their name was mentioned specifically. I think many are extremely defensive. Once they react however, shortly thereafter usually the personal attacks begin. The thread derails and Mods close it. Its a shame really as there are some good threads started and initially some good dialogue. I also think that its a nice balance to hear the trials and tribulations of foreigners here as long as it remains civil. Not everything is rosy here as we all know but it also isn't as bad as many come on here and rant about.  I find many play the "victim role"

I had recently considered  to stop posting not because anyone offended me but because there are times when I ask myself why do I. I have been a member for about 6 years I think and have always been selective on what threads I want to respond in. There are some good posters that I enjoy their posts and there are others...well....I will leave it at that.

I agree Mr Trans, the upgrade isn't as user friendly.

I've been a member for many years on another unrelated forum, which has had a very similar upgrade, & since then posting has decreased considerably.

Must say don't fine upgrade that bad,  l find there is less tolerates with people and not much mud slinging allowed now, so maybe too many holidays.

What l miss is a one single list of forums.

I do not agree with the nature of a lot of the personal or general attacks on this forum, they are very rarely necessary or justifiable.  I think the difference in terms of potential offence  between personal and general is negligible. In some ways i think it can be worse to be offensive to a whole cross section of people (tar us all with the same brush).  I  know we will need to agree to disagree on this subject, but i have replied because although you see general attacks as Ok, i am suggesting that maybe others don't. Attacks on third parties can also be offensive to others and i for one i get really fed up with the constant attacks on bargirls from certain individuals on this forum.

And fat old bald blokes who drink in the afternoon.

Fat people generally seem to be treated as fair game, elsewhere, as well as on this forum and elsewhere

On this forum everyone is fair game.

If you happen to like openminded, smart, attractive, athletic, affluent and charismatic individuals, you are going to have a very hard time here on TVF and will no doubt be seen as insulting the vast majority.  Speak kindly of fat old bald drunks with their prostitute girlfriends and you will have more friends than you can count.

Thai Visa has become predictable and boring. Could be the new format, could be the forum police. The expats who are comfortable with their life in Thailand don't feel the need to post nor the need to be told by others they are doing everything all wrong.

Whatever the reason this forum is going downhill.

Well think it is the new format you open one page and you see dozens of reply's to just one post

you click on it and you get directed to the last post I never get to go to the OP at the first click

to find out what the story is all about but maybe you guys disagree

I'm not fat, I'm just thick-skinned.

When I go to Pattaya, or even Bangkok, I feel like a freak as it is almost impossible to find guys over fifty who are not overweight, and also have other unattractive features.

I do not frequent bars, and my wife was never a bargirl, but you won't find me criticising bargirls or the guys that use them, although I am critical of a lot of their appearances which are mostly self inflicted, it has been well documented of the type I am referring to, even though most of my local farang friends fit that description.

You have to have a thick skin to be on this or any site. If you take offense by general sweeping comments this isn't going to work for you. Because of the varying views and people not afraid to say how they feel about it or a situation you have to be prepared for comments that might offend you especially if you post out there ones personal private activities or preferences. Personally many people set themselves up and then complain when people do not accept their lifestyle or values.

Some should learn to accept that many of us do not like nor accept the bargirl lifestyle/scene many live. I completely respect its their choice but that doesn't mean I have to give it a "like" or say "GREAT MAN,. Cool", "More power to you" etc when I feel totally the opposite. There are other highly charged discussions like "Age gap", "Fat old guys", "Love versus she just wants you as an ATM". I have read many of them as most of you have.  If one posts it out there, one should expect comments and they will all not likely be favorable and in agreement with the posters comments and that's what makes forum life dynamic. People have challenged me on the fact I can't really be that comfortable living here and that its really that inexpensive for me. I accept their points of view. I think VillageFarang and others have been challenged as well. But its usually the folks living a different lifestyle in Thailand and can't or do not want to believe it can happen. Whats the saying, "You only know what you know".

A topic was started on 30th October regarding Phuket being quiet as well as TV posting. Having similar topics in quick succession might be one reason for lack of interest...

I think the poster earlier who said forums in general are all a bit passe has it right......

A Shame really.......

Are you confusing overweight with obese??

A great many people (myself included) are technically overweight but not obese. Go anywhere and i think that the majority of people over fifty will be technically overweight. And have unattractive features.

I agree with Transam, this new forum look is baffling, i cannot find many old topics I used to post on like the jokes thread etc. Also, there used to be a link to 'my topics' or 'topics i started'.......cannot find anywhere now........mind you, I am a computer dinosaur too ...:passifier:

I do not really pay attention to foreigners being overweight or not quite frankly. In fact I really do not notie them at all. However for some reason the  f r i g g e n slobs stand out. They can be skinny or fat. While again its their choice it just keeps the significant stereotype about foreigners alive that they are all over weight slobs slumming around the bars. I mean lets be honest, some look really bad and of course them being a foreigner they stand out like a sore thumb. I have been numerous places with groups of my Thai friends and they usually always see it and comment on it. I usually laugh and say "Yeah Thailand seems to be a magnet and ends up with a lot of that from all the western countries"

in fact just the other day I was out with 2 other couples to get sushi and we saw this one westerner guy, staggering drunk inside the mall. 50+, tore up shirt, camo cargo shorts, unshaven with hair that looked it had been through an egg beater.  I didn't notice him but my wife's friend did. I just said "See honey, in a few years I will dress like that" My wife laughed and slapped me on the back and said " You do and you will be moving to the chicken coop"

I don't know about obese, but nothing wrong with being a little overweight if you don't have a large belly. I weigh myself about every three days on the machine at my local 7-11, and am always between 75 and 77 Ks, My height is 185cms.

Time to start renovating the chicken coop ...

I like to think of my rotund corpulence as a sign of a well-lived life of prosperity.
