Recommendations on best Brokerage account to trade US/ Aus shares

Featured Replies

Hi all, looking for recommendations here  please.

I am an Australian  citizen residing in Bangkok and have done so for last 5 years . I am classified as non resident taxation wise  back in Australia.

Want to open a simple online trading  account  that I can TT monies to from my Thai bank accounts and invest in US and Australian shares.

Seems a bit of a minefield to find something simple.... doing it back in Australia is not an adoption by virtue of fact that non resident for tax purposes enjoys ??? different ( higher) tax rates.

Not looking to dodge tax by this rather have a simple platfrom that I can use to trade stocks  and TT monies from Thai bank  and vice versa.

Dont need a whole raft of broker services except for ability to call them to play buy sell orders and do it electronically .

This will not be huge $$$ rather will probably be around USD 5000 initial investments.... I aint Warren Buffet yet

any advice

Thanks in advance

Try Interactive Brokers, I have an account registered at my Thai address

PM me if you want more info

I have been happy with Fidelity. But I am not sure how they will work with a non-citizen wanting to invest in US shares. Give them a call and find out. They're huge with impeccable rep which is what you want when handing over your money. I've used E*Trade too with good results.

Where are you planning to pay tax on any profits, if not Australia?

As you are classified as non resident for Australian taxation, do you still have an online account with one of the big banks in Australia?

If so, then simple to open a share trading account for Australian and US shares over the phone, as the ID check will be straightforward.

Make yourself aware of how the ATO decide if you are a share trader or an investor, along with the implications.

Second Fidelity.

No need to be US resident or citizen

Hope you are right. Few years ago I tried to get an account with Vanguard and started filling out their form online with my Thai address. Bang, flags everywhere. I tried to back out and give my brother's US address instead. No dice. Calling them up to explain didn't change a thing. They just shut me off.

That's when I signed up with Fidelity giving them my brother's address from the get go. E*Trade before that I had started doing business with in the US and they didn't care when I changed to my Thai address (guess I was grandfathered in as a "good" guy).
