Yes,

took the overnight 21 hour train from Mandalay to Myitkyina, tried for 3 days to get permission  to take the river to Bhamo but no go so had to fly,

than took the boat to Katha and on to Mandalay

PS;  found traveling down the Chindwin much better and more scenic, didn't see another tourist for 7 days

Burma is a photographers disneyland

A really interesting read is John Master's Road To Mandalay" about the 2nd world war in this area.  Many of the great temples were destroyed at this time.

Myanmar- Mount Popa (near Bagan).

Mount Popa is a volcano 1518 meters above sea level and located some 50 km southeast of Bagan. Mount Popa is perhaps best known as a pilgrimage site, with numerous Nat temples and relic sites atop the mountain. It is considered the abode of Myanmar’s most powerful Nats and as such it is the most important Nat worship center.

First some streetscenes from Bagan.

Great photos.  Halfaboy you have peaked my interest in Myanmar.  It is so refreshing to see a population not suffering from obesity and product branding.  And the road look so much safer than here in Thailand.  An cart pulled by oxen must pose much less a threat to ones health than a Thai mini van.

Thank you Bulldozer Dawn. Soon I will be posting a picture of the highway between Bagan and Mount Popa. You will be surprised.

Enjoy !

How did you navigate your way around.  Was there enough English spoken for you to get by.  Or was it all sign language.  What money were you using in the back blocks.  Local currency or USD?

outside the main routes ( Yangon, Bagan, Inle, Mandalay)  english is very limited,

I hvae traveled from as far north as Khamti and Myitkyina to  Kwathoung in the far south, with lots of towns/ villages on the way.

Have also gone down the Irrawaddy, Chidwin and Salween river and out into the Andaman sea.

Mostly use Kyat now although a few years ago $$ were used more.

Traveled by Plane, Boat, Bus, horse cart, Motorcycle and train

I can guarantee if you go you'll enjoy your time there, so refreshing compared to the res of SE Asia

I found images this evening of the Golden rock area  of Burma,  I thought I had lost the memory card

Anyone who has done the trip will know it's a harrowing white knuckle drive up to the top! (and going down too!)In a truck with at least 40 people squeezed in!

Not mention a heck of a long walk to actually see it!

Thousand of people make a pilgrimage to the Golden rock,  every day, many even stay the night ....

Every thing that goes to the hotels or stalls, is carried by porters.,  even people for a price can get transported too!
