I'll start by saying that I have strongly advised people in the past to avoid Kuala Lumpur like cancer when it comes to Tourist Visas. However, I am having another look at the requirements and they seem to have become lighter. They seem to divide people now into listed an not listed nationals.

Guessing by the date in the name of the non listed nationals checklist, it seems to be as recent as 1 November 2016.

They also seem to issue METV's for non-residents.

Any thoughts or recent experiences?

After looking at these documents i come to the same conclusion as you. But i guess, so far no Thaivisa member has tried to apply a METV in KL. Let's see. Would be nice news.

Maybe other consulates / embassies will follow.

We will wait for the first brave TV member to go there and test it. I am not in a rush. Give it a few months and we'll know. :)

You cannot get a METV unless you are resident in Maylasia.

The requirements for a Tourist Visa haven't changed. It has always been possible to get a TR from KL as long as you can meet the criteria and, as a traveling tourist, don't have a too many existing visas.

Those documents say that the residence requirement has to be met only by listed nationals, not the others.

And the criteria appears to have changed for non listed nationals, no more proof of employment or bank account balance in the case of an SETV, which is not the same as before.

In conjunction with this review, i think the requirements are lighter

Furthermore, i understand from the pdf's the METV as being available for non residents except those from listed countries.

Have you read those pdf's when you are saying it's all the same and nothing has changed, elviajero?

I haven't looked at the website for a while, but it has never been a standard requirement for non-residents to have proof of employment. They have always been averse to giving visas to those with a history, in the passport, of visas.

Regardless of what the website implies there is no way they are issuing METV's to non-residents.

I think KL should be avioded by anyone, with a TR history, that's trying to stay long term in Thailand, but for others as long as they can provide flights and hotel bookings they should have no problem getting a SETV as before.

Here's a report from Sept. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/945184-60-day-tourist-visa-kuala-lumpur/?do=findComment&comment=11189603

Yes it has. But it makes no sense to argue. I was rejected in the past ( "we need proof of employment - but I don't work in Malaysia - but you work somewhere right?")and I clearly remember the post of that lady that was touring SE Asia with her husband, that brought a letter from her accountant from the UK and got the visa for her, the husband and the children. Can't find the link but we are talking the first half of 2016.

The only place that rejected me since 2007. And I've been to many places. So I can assure you employment was on the list. See the old link.

Regardless, I have taken a few months break from TV ( and Thailand itself, but looking to come back after the holidays), so I wasn't aware of that post in September of the person that got the SETV meeting the checklist. So that's good news as long as people meet the stated requirements.

As far as METV is concerned, I would try my luck based on that checklist with a Thai bank account with a decent balance for 6 months.

But as I said, not planning to go there anytime soon.

I agree with you there are easier options, however it still represents an option.

Not sure though the visa history has any relevance as long as you tick the boxes on this checklist (I am reffering to KL only), but yeah, i would not recommend it as a prime choice for one having a passport full of tourist visas.

To clarify, I said standard requirements. I am sure you are aware that Thai embassy/consulate websites are not always up to date or correct. I have no doubt that they have played the 'employment' card when looking for a reason to deny a visa. As you will also know they have the right to ask for additional requirements over and above the minimum standards.

Here is another report from Feb 2015 that pretty much backs up what I was saying, https://www.travelfish.org/orientation_detail/malaysia/peninsular_malaysia/kuala_lumpur/kuala_lumpur/104

I did in late March. I had a SETV + 30 day extension followed by a non-B for 90 days and went back to get a new SETV. The website lists the requirements as needing a hotel accommodation and onward travel so I did do that and had no problems. Just used booking.com, printed out a reservation for 3-4 weeks, then cancelled after, so no loss there. Then a flight to Hanoi for like 1300 baht which isn't great but gotta do it.

No idea if I needed those documents or not.....was super simple, just go in and apply with everything. Make sure it's all ready before, follow the regulations on the site and you should have no issue. Read the listed and non-listed countries for sure. Didn't see anyone denied but I wasn't paying much attention. And not sure about METV. I'm from USA btw.

It is interesting that we have this:

Quote

Multiple entries (6-month / only for nationals of a non-listed country): RM 750

However, I think we are going to find that only residents from a non listed country can get an METV, whatever our wishful thinking might lead us to hope. If they did start issuing METVs to temporary visitors, and it became known, I think it would last about 3 days with the queues at the embassy snaking back half way to the airport.

Residency is required only for applicants from a listed country. (E.g India, Sri Lanka etc).

Most people here are from a non listed country, so therefore proof of residency would not be required, according to the website checklist.

I can assure you that if anybody had gotten a METV in KL we would know about it. I would say the chances of getting one is zero to none.

What they have on their website is an error IMO.
