Passport pages fill up quickly these days...

I am on a yearly extension (married)

Passport still valid 2 years

Can I leave the country with my nearly full passport and get a new in my home country

going  back to LOS  showing old (cancelled) and new?

Called TM and they told me I have to get a new passport in Thailand if I want to keep my extension

Sounds a bit strange to me?

Depends on your nationality? I have renewed several UK passports in-country and it took around 2 weeks tops but some countries take their time and some are so bad, it is easier to go home and get a new one. Either way, I think transferring the Extension is the same regardless of where the new passport originated but make sure you have Re-entry permit linked to the Extension in the 'old' passport otherwise they may consider you Extension canceled when you leave without a Re-entry permit..

Entering with a new passport and showing the current, valid extension and Re-entry permit in the recently canceled passport should work at Suvarnabhumi but Don Meuang may take a bit longer depending of the IO needs to take advice from a superior.

As well as for an Immigration departure stamp, does your nearly-full passport also have sufficient space for the half-page re-entry permit stamp you'll need in order to keep your existing permission to stay alive upon your return with a new passport (assuming that you have not already obtained this)?

If it doesn't, then renewing it in Thailand would, indeed, appear to be your only practical option.

Still space for a re-entry stamp.
Called TM again and talked to another IO

Seems like it is possible to to re-new abroad and enter with both new and old passports.

I will try and update later on.

On a related matter, I plan to get a new p/p (Oz) in BKK in early January. I will pay extra to get it within 3 days there while I wait. Once I return to Surin at the end of that week, do I have to go straight away to Kap Choeng to report my new p/p & get it 'registered', with transfer of retirement extension etc, or can it wait till my next 90-day report in mid-Feb?

You could wait until you do your 90 day report if you don't expect to leave the country before then.

So is there a certain answer as to whether we need to get our passport renewed at our embassy here in Thailand or can we do it in our home country?

My passport expires in June 2018 and my extension of stay is due August 22 2017.

I am assuming I will need to get a new passport prior to the extension as I will have less than 12 months left in my current passport when I apply for the extension in August this year.

Any helpful replies are appreciated.

It is your choice as to where you get your new passport. There is no requirement to do it at the embassy here.

You need to get a new passport prior to applying for your extension or it will only be done to the date your passport expires in June of 2018.

Thank you very much Ubonjoe.

I plan to go back home in March for 3 months. Will get a new passport at that time.

My concern is that that upon my reentry to Thailand that the immigration officers may say that as my passport with the reentry and extension of stay stamp is now cancelled that the extension of stay is now not valid.

Do you have any thoughts on this please?

You re-entry permit in the cancelled passport remains valid.

When you enter the country you will use both passports to show the re-entry permit in you old passport. People do this all time.

Thank you for your help.

I assume therefore that the extension of stay will also be recognised and the correct permitted to stay stamp and date will be placed in my passport in line with my extension of stay date?

Every thing in a cancelled passport remains valid.

They will stamp you in to the date shown on the re-entry permit.

Just as a follow up, do I need to carry both passports until I do a new extension of stay and get a new stamp in the new passport?

Thanks
