Has anybody bought a new bike and chosen a favorite number for their bike?

How much is the cost and what are the procedures to select a number in Chiang Mai?

Yes, wifey and I did.

Didn't cost anything as the numbers weren't that special or valuable.

Ask to see the book for available numbers and tell them what you want.

You may have to wait as they are given out in strict order this way.

Wifey got 898 and I got 989.

Should add that this was in Kanchanaburi.....hopefully similar procedure in CM.

The Honda dealer where I bought my motorcycle from tried to scam me by asking me to pay 2000 baht for the number.

Could you please tell me where the place is located so that I can do it myself? Is it the transport department in Nong Hoi, Chiang Mai?

Thanks for the info.

Some numbers can run high. '8888' on a Benelli last year cost the owner 10,000 baht.

Was quoted 1,500 baht for '300' and told have to wait a long time thus didn't bother.

And if you want 1 gor gor 1111 on BKk plate ...that went for auction around 25 millions baht.

Just go ask at yer local transport office ...I'm sure prices vary wildly from free to ridiculous.

Mine was just a local Honda dealer down in southern Thailand ...not sure how the Thai reg numbers work ,but this was a brand new model bike just released in the country, one of the very first to be registered, think it's easier to pick any number when in this position.

I could have chosen any number 1 to 999 no restrictions.

.

I am not looking for those very special numbers like 1 or 8888.

I just want to avoid some unlucky numbers.

Things in Southern Thailand might work differently than in ChiangMai.

From first impression, the people working in the transport ministry aren't friendly at all. Most of them have sour faces when you ask more than a couple of questions.
