Mobile phone question for BKK

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I'm moving to BKK in one month and am wondering about the best way to handle the phone situation. I currently have a LOCKED iPhone and AT&T is my carrier. I'm going to get off the AT&T contract starting in January. The way I see it, I have a few options. Which in your experience has worked best?

1. Try to get my current iPhone unlocked here in the USA, then get a Thai SIM card upon arrival.

2. Buy a new, unlocked iPhone here in the USA and get a Thai SIM card upon arrival.

3. Buy a new iPhone in Bangkok and a Thai SIM card in Bangkok.

I know the SIM/data will cost the same regardless of which option I choose. My question centers more on how you've found it in terms of migrating content (apps, contacts, etc.) from an old phone to a new one over in Thailand, as well as if you've had any issues with losing content when you keep your old phone but insert the Thai SIM for the first time.

Many thanks in advance!

Have you checked with AT&T about unlocking your existing phone? You may find that's the less expensive option than buying a new phone https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/?#/

Migrating from one iPhone to another is the same wherever you are, provided you've got a computer with iTunes installed

Yea, that was the #1 option in my post above :). I plan on talking to them this weekend. Thanks for the reply!
