After weathering storm, junta can enjoy smooth sailing until election

BANGKOK: -- Having passed the halfway stage on its road map to democracy, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has weathered the storm. Now that the worst is over, it can expect an easy ride in 2017 as the election draws near.

This past year has been a rough road for the ruling NCPO. The economy has dragged while the alarming human rights situation has drawn international pressure. Meanwhile domestic politics remain filled with drama despite tough regulations. But all in all, the NCPO has ridden out the storm and is now entering the final straight of its road map.

Having made great efforts to combat abuses within the fishing sector, the military-led government reaped the benefit earlier this year when the US State Department lifted Thailand from the bottom-rung Tier 3, to Tier 2 Watchlist status in its Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report.

Weathered the storm, what nonsense ! I'd like to think this article is just taking a sarcastic swipe at the junta and the la la land they live in !

The reality is the headline couldn't be further from the truth considering all that's going on and with what's just unfolding the worst is potentially yet to come.

Road map again

PatOngo quoted Bon Jovi so in respect of the road map can I suggest the Hollies ?

" The road is long with many a winding turn and leads who knows where, who knows when. "

Nothing truer these days.

"People will no longer expect much from the NCPO, as bread-and-butter issues and national reconciliation will give way to a singular focus on the promised election.
In the meantime, the junta can relax and continue conducting aerobics sessions in front of Government House and other publicity stunts. All it has to do now is coast along until the election next year, when hopefully it will step down peacefully."

The Thai people should have very low expectations for the future.  Those who can should look for opportunities in other countries.

Yes, but the credit for the best musical description (that probably should become the Thai national anthem) goes to Talking Heads !!!

Come on, they've at least managed to pat themselves on the back daily.  Pretty impressive ambidexterity really.

Just think we can still look forward to the PM's New Year speech listing all their achievements for the year.

Yes the lotterytickets have a fixed price EVERYWHERE,

BKK traffic is much safer without congestions,

The police isn't corrupt anymore and does a great job now,

Thailand is safe again so the bins can come back in the malls/markets,

Pattaya beachroad is cleaned and organised,

Streetvendors are moved,

Gambling dens are gone.

Much better like this.
