Looking for voltage converter

Recommended Posts

I was back home in the US and decided to bring back an expresso machine I had.  Thinking I could get a voltage converter to us it here...

I went to the usual places - Amorn, HomePro and Global House and none of them had a large converter - I need a 1500-2000 watt unit...

Anyone seen a place that sells them?

1500-2000 Watt unit you will need to order from Bangkok. If you want Chinese then it will be easy to find. Thai-made? You will probably need to pre-order from a transformer factory; especially if you want 110V, 117V. There seems to be a lot of 220-240V-100V step-down transformers around catering to Japanese. Japanese quality? Forget it, they are close to impossible to find. Amorn may order a Chinese one for you but it may only be 100V output.

I bought a 1,500 watt converter for my (too small and inefficient) electric space heater from the US at a small electronics shop on Chiang Moi Road a couple years ago.  They had even larger converters.

On the Google streetview link below you'll see the place to the right with the ProPlus sign.

The merchant told me that it was Chinese made.  110 volts.  Brand name is "Henry" which is not up there with LG, but it works.

That's the problem, 110V. Some USA items really need the full 117-120V to operate properly.

There are Korean-made step-down transformers for sale on eBay with free shipping to Thailand (about US $80-90 per transformer), but they are fixed at 110V. But much better quality than the Chinese ones.

I have this 1500W step-down converter made in Hong Kong. I used it to run a large coffee maker way back in the days before the coffee shop explosion here in CM.

Of course, someone had to plug my coffee maker into a 220v wall socket and kill the damn thing.....of course, nobody confessed.

If you are interested to purchase please PM me for details. Cheers.

Go to an electric shop an buy a one KVA transformer and either wire it youself or have them wire it for you. Last forever and you can run anything.

be advised, some stuff will still burn up due to the difference in frequency. But a heating unit should be okay.

AC motors will run significantly slower here than in the US.

A decent quality voltage converter must be good at conversion efficiency and with built-in overload protection.

Of course, the greater the output power, the higher the cost, the more expensive the price. And the greater output power general means greater volume.

The plug and socket can be fully customizable.

Thanks for that. I've heard of the brand as well as Saengthong. Saengthong apparently no longer make them; only audio transformers. I'll make some inquiries with contacts in Bangkok regarding KVA.

How did your search turn out? I am also looking to acquire a quality VC. ;-}

I ended up ordering a voltage stabilizer/regulator with 100V, 110V outputs. Quite a bit more extensive than I originally wanted but in my application it was necessary.

If you want to pre-order a basic step-down transformer made in Thailand, PM me and I can refer you to a couple of factories who will make them to your specification. They will also build the box for you with plugs, fuse, etc. Otherwise, Amorn and places like that sell Chinese junk.

Cleaning up shop i came across a very old voltage converter,i never used it myself but i bought it along with a bunch of other tools.

Very heavy and built in 1975!!!!I have no way of testing it but it was working when i got it.
