Just got done by customs on my Christmas Care Package.

In nearly 30 years here, never paid money on a package, just the mysterious 7 THB,

had 3 parcels arrive yesterday, small but heavy, and 2 the week before, I think

the secret is small packages, sent by mail, NEVER get anything sent by couriers ,

the likes of FEDEX,UPS,TNT, you are guaranteed,to be presented with a Tax,or

storage,or other obscure bills.

Further to my comments about the taxes I had to pay on my two shipments of trainers, I've now got photocopies of the documentation headed "Notification to collect international postal items" on which is information written in English and Thai.

Interestingly, it says on there "Subject to customs law, valued per each consignment over ฿1,500 must pay import duty and tax and the customs officers have the right to open such package".  Maybe that is why many items do not attract charges.

My daughter was saying this only the other day ,its getting beyond a joke , i notice the cards we recieved this xmas , cost more to post one than the 7 i sent from here .

That's right.

In New Zealand I can't post a parcel to Thailand by surface mail, it has to go by air and costs far too much even for that. Just another rip off.

As might be expected, the duty rates on different items coming into Thailand vary WIDELY, with the highest rates seemingly keyed to domestic industries that the Thais want to shield from any competition.

Contrary to what one poster mentioned above, normal small electronics tend to have a pretty low rate when assessed, often just 7%. But at the other end of the spectrum, shoes sent into Thailand often seem to get flagged for duty, even when delivered by Thai Post.

And some of the highest duties I've ever been charged for anything shipped here have been for clothes, where the total duty and tax assessed ended up being a higher amount that the total real value of the clothes themselves. (That was back before I learned to never use FedEx or DHL for my incoming shipments...)

a higher amount that the total real value of the clothes themselves.

Happened to me in London. A box big enough to carry a couple of jackets had to be sent in a "special" category. I had already packed them, and the cost of the box alone was more than the value of the clothes, which I threw away as I could replace them 10 times over for the cost of posting.

Just another rip off.

even a Thai name and address written in Thai is not always safe. :-(

I wonder if you put the recipient as "Mr Prayup". would there be any problems of this nature. Just a name and just a thought.

Canada checks what they can just like any other country. S unsop watching TV :-)

I send hundreds parcels yearly and never had one caught by the slaves.

But for sure delivery is slow because slaves are slow to work it seems.

Whyc should I stop watching tv??

All countries Is true check the packages by x-ray but canadians or australians have more strickt rules about food and others...this Is undeniable and nothing to do with your hunbdreds of parcels, probably u dont send food or animals and nothing Irregular to stop them. Slow timing means also that they check one by one like I saw.

P.s.: What do you mean by "slaves" ??

Overall I think the cost of living in Thailand is hard to beat.

If cheap living were my goal in life I guess that would matter

A slave is anybody anywhere in the world doing this kind of shiiite job for any government.

More than slaves when knowing how useless they are, tons of drugs is travelling everywhere in the world and there is nothing that they can do about it. All cops, customs and army are just ridiculous people who do these jobs because there are not smart enough to do any other interesting job that requires a brain !

Yeah I know what you mean.  Not my goal either.  If I remember you're raising a young family.  Gee that's really costly these days.  Pressures gotta be pretty intense at times.  I all ready put 3 through college and thank God they're all quite successful.

Me just kick back retired trying to figure out new ways to blow my cash!!!

Good luck man!

In correct context ; "I don't understand?  Had enough of import duty?  Can you be a bit more specific? Overall I think the cost of living in Thailand is hard to beat.  Especially after 30 years in San Diego.  What were you fed up with exactly?"

Yes you did not understand my post at all

You could re-read it but I will tell you now that I did not say I had enough of import duty just that now.... it is nicer not having to pay it any longer

What I was fed up with was quite a few things but not on topic of this thread

I mentioned it in passing as a intro as to why we no longer need pay such duties as this thread mentions

I think that the OP didn't do too badly.  In the Thai family that I know there's a few who have big feet, and I'm talking UK size 13 which is continental 47.  So I ordered four pairs of trainers of the right size for them for delivery in the UK.  I thought it would make a nice present for them.

Then I sent the trainers from the UK to Thailand in two separate parcels of two pairs each (weight around 3 Kg each) for £32 per parcel.  The total value of the two pairs of trainers in each parcel was around £150 so totalling £300.  They were addressed in Thai and English to a Thai person to an address near Chiang Mai.  I couldn't combine everything into one parcel because of the way the items arrived in the UK.

When the parcels arrived in Thailand, I got quite a shock as only a pile of paperwork was sent to the destination address.  Payment of ฿2,737 was demanded on each parcel, making a whopping  ฿5,474 in all.  The official paperwork valued a parcel at ฿7,000 with import duty of ฿2,100 and VAT of ฿637 to reach the ฿2,737 figure.  Then someone had to go to the local office to collect the parcels and to pay up.  This extra £60 per parcel came as a bit of a shock and I have to say that I won't be sending anything this way in future!

So it looks like there's import duty of 30% and then VAT of 9% too that's got to be paid in Thailand on top of whatever you paid for the goods in the first place.  Rather an expensive set of presents!  :-(

Yeah 30% duty and 7% VAT is the going rate for footwear, next time check the customs website.

I nearly did it last week as I'm the same size but went to the big sports store central festival Pattaya 2nd floor and there were a few size 13 and at 50% discount, I guess they have trouble getting rid of them, but saved myself many thousand baht

Glad we got that cleared up. Thanks a lot man...

Then I completely agree with you.

That's why I left my country. Full of gov people, 6 different kind of police corps and politichians Without brain And all their families and relatives full of priviledges that we pay even If we are jobless and with a public debt at 140% growing every year. They never lose their job and even their taxes are paid by us. Useless people. A slave you don't have to pay. Just a bed, water, a soup, bread....that's all but he works 16 hours a day....

Hope and wish you a happy 2017
