Immigration Bureau confirms internal system not hacked

BANGKOK, 19 December 2016 (NNT) – The Immigration Bureau said no unauthorized access has been found in its immigration system, nor has any data been stolen.

In response to an ongoing rumor that the Immigration Bureau has been hacked by an unknown group or individuals, Immigration Police chief Pol Lt Gen Natthorn Phrosunthorn said the agency’s immigration screening system is not connected to the internet; therefore, it cannot be accessed by an outsider, ruling out the possibility of any information being stolen.

He added that the bureau’s Personal Identification Blacklist Immigration Control System which enables immigration centers to access other databases both at home and overseas such as the Interpol, the Customs Department, security agencies, and commercial airlines is a closed system that doesn’t grant any sorts of remote access to anyone.

As for the bureau’s website, he said it contains only general information which is not confidential or related to national security.

Its all tight as a drum, nothing can get through !,but i wonder

if they could tell if anyone had been inside the system, anonymously ,

Yes they are really strict about keeping details safe, they have even stopped

sending pieces of paper out ,receipts for 90 days with other peoples data

on the back, had full passport page of a lady from U.S.A, last time.

Too true. Last 90 day check in I did had a visa page from someone's Russian passport sitting in my passport printed on back of the receipt.
Security is non existent.

on a serious note (this is my serious face)

"Immigration Police chief Pol Lt Gen Natthorn Phrosunthorn said the agency’s immigration screening system is not connected to the internet;"

So do they have their own internal network tied together by hardwire or RF link across the country some how?

or are all their computers just on a local area network in the office? must be as I see network cables plugged into the backs of all the computers at immigration. Of course the that does not mean internet access.

Amazing how old the PC's are with PS 2 connectors.

Except for the fore mentioned agencies which are all "remotely accessing" the system using what?

I think he thinks just because the is not a public website somehow it cant be accessed.

If it is on a local network, it can be accessed/hacked. All someone needs to do is join the network or use an access point that is already there. Likely one password causing resistance.

If it isn't on a local network, what is the purpose of the system? By saying that to cover themselves, they are basically saying nobody has access, that would have to include immigration checkpoints at the airports and land crossings.

likewise,  0n my last 90 day report I was asked to sign a notice saying I did not wish to change any details on that document where they ask your personal details ie internet usage and where I eat etc. On the back were details of an Indian chap. I just put a line through all his details.

Anonymous already hacked and released 1 gb database of criminal court earlier this year the government denied it happened there were also other data released but it all vanished from pastebin etc very quickly.

Who would want to hack the Thai immigration website? Sony pictures, yes, Donald Trump's twitter account, yes, Apple, yes, but Thai immigration, why? Boring.

Hacking would be in response to the attitude of the organization more than anything; constantly evolving visa regulations that make Thailand far less hospitable than before.  Like you said boring.  Immigration is making Thailand boring.  Just go spend your money in a neighboring country where you are welcomed.  Don't hack.  Thailand has be come a paradise for inept, surly, attention seeking civil servants and bureaucrats.

Immigration Bureau confirms internal system not hacked

Please TV, review the transcript because it is very likely that the final word in this headline got omitted....yet

Hmmmmm... interesting.....

If the system is not online, they must have some very long cables connecting all the office then :D

edit: lol, well seems someone beat me to that Captain Obvious comment

It's on sneakernet...where they walk between offices with a real piece of paper.

While not a hack per se, wasn't the Immigration system, compromised earlier this year, revealing details/locations of a few thousand foreigners? Maybe that was a feature? Or a bug?

The only defense it to turn the computers OFF.

We've seen some serious organisations hacked over the last few years; the US Army comes to mind; 1Bn Yahoo users, Talk Talk, etc etc so I can't comprehend how the Thai authorities believe they are "safe"; no one is safe.

When you factor in that most Thai Govt computers still use XP, the have non-registered or non-existent AV, the general level of IT awareness, user aptitude and overall common sense is low then it leads to me to believe that any and all data is at risk.

It's only a question of time before we're going to see an embarrassing demonstration with lots of data openly in the public domain.

That's pretty hilarious right there. This is a system where one can only gain regular access by using Internet Explorer and has an infrastructure that seems to be straight from 1995. As if they would even know if they'd been data hacked. Not a chance. lol

All immigration officers have Photographic memory.

And they will ask all visitors to wear " My name is " badges.

Who are they trying to kid. All computers can be hacked. Just takes one on the inside or slip up by a It guy a hole your firewall. Gee you phone and pc can be hacked and access to your Webcam and microphone can be used with out you even knowing. Why do think Snoganberg (sp) puts his phone in the the fridge and FB CEO Mark Z puts tape over his Webcam (I do too). Do they know something the average Joe doesn't ? I think so.
