PHUKET:-- For the second time since its completion on October 31, the Samkong Underpass will be shut off to the public – this time from 10pm tonight to midday tomorrow for an official grand opening ceremony to be held on-site.

The ceremony is scheduled for 7am-9am tomorrow, with Phuket Governor Chokchai Dejamornthan and Highways Department Chief Construction Engineer Parinya Sangsuwan among the list of chief guests.

The celebrations will feature both Islamic and Buddhist religious rites, as well as a big bike parade as part of the grand opening.

But bikes are not allowed to use the underpass. Feels a bit like taunting...

Oh and isn't this the underpass where they announced there wouldn't be any opening ceremony? Flip, flop, flip, flop... :)

Glad I read this, flight later this morning.  Will be the road behind Loch Palm for me.

Looks like it happened yesterday. I was heading south & saw them taking down tables in the northbound lane. Traffic outside backed up to Central.

Not much to celebrate. How many years did it take to complete this?

Sublime timing as usual, during the peak traffic hours. They have been doing the road from Karon to Patong early December, started blocking the road at the airport junction, the main South - North junction on the bypass is a mess, roads that have recently been surfaced again have holes in them, concrete drain covers are missing, broken...So, you may ask  'what's new? ' ...

The whole construction was unprofessional from start to finish causing untold problems for so many locals and motorist alike and now they want to close the underpass during the rush hours traffic, who the hell makes these illogical decisions causing yet more misery to one and all.

Time would be better spent at the Central underpass as all the fire fighting equipment (wonder if they ever get tested or certified) & emergency telephones are covered in grime. How often are the pumps run to make sure they are not seized up. It happens to pool pumps if they are not run for a while & all it takes tp free them up is to turn the screw at the fan end.

Hilarious!  Can't they take 10 minutes for pat on the back photos, and let it go at that?

This ceremony was inevitable, without it it would have been extremely bad luck.

Just glad the underpass is working, and I must say, I like it. Just a bit of a speedway, but it moves along well.
