It is not an "area of influence", the search areas is covered by Australia's legal commitment to international maritime treaties. Whether you agree with the project expenditure or not is irrelevant.

The Air France plane was located within a very short time, but the black boxes were not able to be recovered until a few years later which assisted investigators to identify the causes of the crash and recommend further air safety measures

Thanks for the update on the Air France plane.

I find it hard to believe that any country can be forced to carry on a search indefinitely, even if it is in their "area". If the plane had crashed in the area controlled by Fiji, would they have been expected to carry on as long as this one has? They obviously could not afford to do so.

Perhaps wait a few years until technology improves...

Chinese could be doing more though, instead of focusing on setting up military bases all over the SC Sea, not to mention all the revenue generated by the rest of the world from their plastic junk.

As has previously been demonstrated for disasters in the region with small nations such as Fiji, Oz / NZ would assist with funding and resources

I'm interested as to why you don't think China and Malaysia should be contributing. I would be very concerned as to why NZ should be paying anything unless they had people on the plane, or if it was an NZ plane. In the case of the OP, neither is true, AFAIK.

Hmm... good point. Taken. Perhaps a rephrase - "I don't normally indulge in conspiracy theories but in this case... " I guess that should redress the issue.

I tend to think the depths and terrain of the Indian ocean and its seafloor won this one. Over 4 kms at some points deep with a monster mountain range running right up it guts.  Highly volcanic and active. It is impressive as an unknown natural environment.

No conspiracy theories. Difficult task and they probably missed it. Imagine one sweep or pass and things are nqr. The proverbial needle in a haystack has been superseded by a boeing at the bottom of the indian ocean.

I was asking a serious question. The plane is Malaysian. Why shouldn't they pay if the search was in Fijian waters and why should NZ pay anything?

They should stop wasting so much money to find it. All aboard are dead, if militaries think something happened that is upon them. However no bodies are coming home and it is a huge waste of money.
