'... the teacher concerned - a female ... said that both her parents were in the civil service at the C9 level ...'

For which each presumably paid somewhat more than B50,000.

Does anything good ever happen in Pathum Thani? It appears to be the Hell Hole of Thailand.

Are you writing this from a bar stool in Phuket, Pattaya, Nana or Cowboy?

OK, but I don't support your comment '...without the written consent of both parents...'. The law involved in this matter is absolute, who would want laws which can be 'adjusted' at will?

Can you really imagine a situation where:

a. The teacher actually asks permission from the parents to hit a student (7 years old) several  / many times. And what about respect for a clear, absolute and important law?

b. The parents make first contact and tell the teacher to punish the child with many hits of a big stick? And what about respect for a clear, absolute and important law?

The law is indeed very clear. And someone from the Ministry did get involved earlier this year and reminded parents that teachers who break the law become criminals. He urged parents to always file a police complaint.

Now this parent has done just that, let's see what happens.

I see your point, but for me personally I see no problem for a teacher to discipline any of my children be it by way of being caned as I was back in the days, we called it the 6er, you knew when you were going to get a 6er, i.e. 6 hits across the palms of your hands, 3 on each, and if your were not quick enough to move your hand after each hit, you would get it on the rebound on the way up, painful yes, it helped if you tilted your palm as the cane was coming down so as to minimise the impact.

Kids are kids, and need to be disciplined, either a home or at school, I am not for teachers throwing mugs or whipping kids across the back, suffice to say one of our twin boys aged 12 had been warned that he was not to be seen hanging around with one of the village kids, who is also 12, drinks and rides a motorbike, you know trouble when you see it, long of the short, we drove straight past them in the opposite direction, our son was in the middle of the motorbike, 3 up travelling at around 80 kilometres an hour, no helmets, when he got home, my wife took to him Thai style with a bamboo stick across his back, arms, legs, and I dare say drew blood, I did not interfere, he apologised and has never been seen on a bike again, some may think that's far fetched, each to their own, but a parent has to do what a parent believe is right, a teacher on the other hand would not have the right to go to this extreme, although I am up for 6ers any day for my kids from the teacher/s if they step out of line, controlling that would be another matter.

The school has been named in Thai media. The googling of that name finds the website of the school. The photos of the Teachers matched against blurrred eyed or eyes blacked out of teacher in Thai media is easy to match. So within about 20 minutes of on-line detective work you can find out the teachers details.

Now why tell you? Just want to show how privacy is zero in Thailand. A foreigner can find out all this using a smart phone. No wonder the government websites were hacked so easily.

I think the quicker that parents complain to the principal, the quicker the problem maybe solved, as was the case with our 7 year old daughter in her 1st year, that's this year, she was struggling to learn Thai, but her teacher said don't worry to much, she will pick it up within 3 months and she will keep an eye on her, she was correct, she picked it up within 3 months and is now pretty fluent in Thai with A grades, she had a relief teacher one day early in her schooling and was called a name by the relief teacher unbeknown by us, the word was "E-Falang" and it was only discovered by us after she asked her mother that afternoon, what does "E-Falang" mean, the mother asked why and she told her, never seen my wife's eyes light up like that before, but I could smell fire.

The following morning my wife complained to the head of the school in the playground in front of assembly, (audience) like a dog taking to a bone and letting everyone know how it tastes, the relief teacher who was teaching our daughter was quickly moved to the library after a short meeting with the head and other teachers the same day, and was told not to come in contact with our daughter ever again or he would be removed from the school and he was placed on watch by the other teachers.

The word "E-Falang" I was advised by my wife is a word that is not used in Laos very often, but is a derogatory word similar to me calling her a "bitch" or a male, a "prick", suffice to say we were very satisfied how quickly the school responded, I only found out later by asking my wife what she said to the principal to get the ball rolling so quickly, and she said she threatened the head that she would post what happened to our daughter on every forum and media outlet with the name of the school, the teacher, the principal and the schools response of the school if they didn't remove this prick of a teacher from teaching our daughter immediately.

I think this kind of pressure does have an impact, well from our experience it did anyway, and I don't know if that has to do with the school being a Catholic Thai school Vs a public Thai school ?

Quite convenient, but would you expect anything else, given the circumstances ?

Maybe she has already joined the monk hood.
