Farang who "leave their wallet at home" or otherwise skip the beer round.

I could never skip a shout or otherwise expect others to pay my way. Never could, never will. It is just unethical.

However, as I wander past some bars with towers of chang being shared amongst friends, I wonder if any of these gents conveniently slip off to the hong naam when it is their turn.

I have heard a few stories over the years, which is why I ask.

Have you ever experienced someone pulling a swifty?

The closest I came was when myself, my wife, her friend and husband went fishing; and as we were packing up the husband "accidentally" put a number of my hand made fishing lures into his tackle box (at 1000 baht a pop). I retrieved them and we haven't gone fishing together since.

Nick J. Never has a truer word been spoken.  Making friends (or more accurately Acquaintences) with such people can indeed lead you to significant disappointment. I tend to steer well clear of the lot of em!

I sense a few examples beyond skipping a round.

Few too many prior to posting. Why not happy newish year. No one does that anyway.

I agree , just go and get your on beer in ,

People drink at different speeds and slow drinkers end up with a few beers on the go, and quick drinkers are usually waiting for everyone else to sip up .

I much refer it when people just go and get their own drink as required

You're overthinking this.  I'm pretty sure that's not the point of the OP.  He's talking freeloaders.

I'm not a drinker, but I got the reputation of being mean, because I would not buy drink for other people, but working as a professional musician meant that I could not avoid being in the company of drinkers, not that I wanted to, but just wish that some people would have accepted me for what I am.

Actively worrying about splitting the price of a tower of Chang makes you among the lower level of bottom feeders by default. If somebody does this it happens once and if you have any class you ignore it and it ends right there.

I couldn't imagine worrying about who had how many glasses of Chang on a regular basis.

Yes I am talking about the ones who drink half a tower of your beer and then vanish. I don't do bars either but have heard.

There is one chap I do know who turns up at your house at exactly dinner time each night until you tell him to beat it, so he just moves onto someone else.

Thailand,  sadly is a beacon for free loading users. Balloon chasing Cheap Charlies. Not of any value. Making friends with them is a big mistake. They see generosity as s weakness.

Which is one of several reasons to be cautious about farang who are overly eager to "get to know" you, especially if you're a newly arrived farang looking to develop new friendships. Once they've developed a reputation for cadging drinks, food, whatever, they need to be on the lookout for new supply of victims.

Never thought I' d come accross people of like mind on this subject. I gave up the booze 15 years ago and all the " spoongers and moochers" that went with that scene...(including the ones who are happy to come back to your home and have a big "knees up" until all YOUR booze is gone, then they slowly slink off.

But I came accross the same type in the form of lending out tools. Imagine guys who buy houses and condos but wouldn' d dream of buying as much as a hammer or screwdriver to maintain it...they would rsther borrow someone elses's ( and conviently seem to always "forget" to return them.

I even gave up bothering about having " social" friends. Most Farang people I have met here have one, and only one, favour subject........"themselves".

A group of us had always drank together but we had one guy who always drank but did not buy a round himself.  We got tired of it one day so when he left for the restroom, we paid the bill except for his drinks and left the restaurant and went someplace else.  He got the lesson when he came back and saw the empty table and the bill waiting for him.  He never drank with us again.

A few years ago my g/f and I were  invited to a restaurant meal/drink by a friend here in LOS.  I'd known the friend about 2 years and he wanted me to meet another couple he'd recently met, along with 2 other mutual friends & g/fs. We arrived after the 1st round of drinks  had been served to the table. I didn't fancy beers, so I ordered a bottle of whiskey. I poured myself a shot, placed the bottle in the centre of the table and invited the others help themselves to it. Not long after I was surprised to see that the 'new' guy had switched from beer to whiskey and had moved the bottle to his corner of the table to facilitate access to it.  When I needed a top-up, he frowned at me for having to ask him to return the bottle to the centre of the table!

I later found out from another friend that the 'new' guy had a habit of making surprise visits to his house just before meal times, and rarely left until he'd been fed & watered. He then started turning-up uninvited at my house. I got to the stage of dreading even the thought of meeting him anywhere.  He even had the audacity to tell a friend I'd invited him on an up-coming visa run with to Laos. Naturally I had absolutely no intention of inviting him to join us. This was the 'last straw', so I told him face-to-face what I thought of his behaviour. Thankfully this ended the 'friendship'. I believe he'd been a Freemason in the UK. Obviously he took the 'Free' part literally when he came to LOS!! I wonder whether anyone else has met this same Freeloader in Phetchabun province?

Socialism at work I suppose. Personally I would only drink with someone I  know well and trust to pay his/hers way (on the few occasions when I drink, like tonight). No problem with buying a round, coz I know that he/she will do the same next time - and I know they wont abuse it.

As most of us know Thailand is a magnet for freeloaders that pry on the inexperience and weakness of others. Foreigners and Thais alike. Newcomers are wise to choose their company carefully, a lot of foreigners are here for the wrong reasons.

With you 100% on this.

I agree, but it's a tradition inherited from places like the UK and Australia, where you have to queue at a crowded bar to get served. Rounds save queuing time.

I've known people who ran out of money here. They start borrowing money then take ages to pay back. When they eventually pay they immediately want to borrow again.

Another case from my early days: a farang came to ask me for a cigarette. He was rather unpleasant so I declined, only to be called a cheap charlie. Guessing he'd spent the last of his money in the bars, as so many do.

As for the Freeloaders who wish to leech off you in Paradise Thailand, and resent/avoid giving one baht to the kitty to pay for beer/food/restaurants etc.  They do it deliberately - "Oh it's so far to travel for only  2 weeks"........

A pox on them - they know who they are.
