Tourism officials in southern Thailand were upbeat yesterday as visitors flooded to the Pangnga area to celebrate the New Year holidays.

Chuchart Orncharoen of the Pangnga TAT said that since the start of December it was clear that tourist arrivals in the province were increasing day by day. Most of the visitors were from Europe - especially Germans - and Australia, he said.

People were arriving in Phuket and travelling to Pangnga in droves.

He added that hotels in the Khao Lak area would have a 95% occupancy rate at New Year meaning that more than 10,000 tourists were in that area.

Somebody picked a day from the calendar for people to enjoy a long time ago and instead of enjoying every day of the year, they are only alive for one day. What a way to exist.

It is sad what Takau pa became,  dive shop row, higher end hotels.. The mom and pop guest house business all but left.  Of the Big T did not help.. What the area is seeing it the exclusive areas, far removed for Thai society enclosed in their own compounds.

That's not Takuapa Town, you are talking about Khao Lak. And it's far away from being full and lights are off at 10.00 p.m.

Pricey and boring

Indeed, the last week the occupancy in the hotels here in Khao Lak  ( not the same as Takua Pa haha ) have gone up, guests seem to appreciate a cool resort town with lots of nature, markets  and real Thai nightlife possibilities. The money spending of the tourists is a bit down though.

As for comment about 'the lights going off at 22:00'  and 'pricey and boring'..    have you ever been here at all ? Do you know anyone here ?

One of the best social vibes in Thailand here ( not only big resorts )  lots of small and cheap eateries,  beach bars, live music bars ( not much beer-bar crap ) lively divers / dive centers and friends scene, great nature and even a few big night pubs these days ...

Bring on the tourists, and a good season !

Still like the area, on my list for 2017..but it has been over 20 years... since I have been down there..
