Hey there fellas,

I was just wondering which is the better casino on the thai combodia border near surin. And is it safe there to take my family. I would like to stay  at casino for one night, then come back to sisaket. I ask this because i have heard some bad stories about safety in combodia. But i figure if i go directly to casino and stay there should be ok. Any imformation would be appreciated. Oh and whats the deal with crossing the border how much does it cost.

Cheers big ears

There is a border crossing right close to where Sisaket and Surin provinces meet, we used it last February when travelling from Siem Reap to Ubon. Not sure of the name of the border but the Cambodian side is Choam about 10 kms from Anlong Veng, if I recall correctly there was a casino complex about 100m from the border but I don't know what it was like as we didn't go into it. The Cambodian visa I think was around $20 or $30 I'm not sure as we paid in baht as we entered Cambodia at a different border and it is more expensive to pay in baht I think it was around 1600b each. As for safety in Cambodia myself and the missus didn't have any problems and if your only going across for a night out in the casino by the border I would have thought you probably wouldn't have any problems.

the thai side of the border near surin is known as chong chom and the cambodian side is o'smach.  i crossed there about 7 years ago.  at that time there were two casinos, the royal hill resort and the o'smach resort.  they are across the street from each other and are just steps away from the border crossing itself (you can easily walk, no transport needed).  royal hill was older and not real nice, i had a room there overnight.  but i spent my time at the osmach resort as it was much nicer.  i believe royal hill has a new resort, sangam resort and casino.  i'm not sure if that is the old royal hill but renovated or a third casino.  but it sounds like that is the newest one so probably the best bet to stay there.  i know someone who goes there regularly and can give a more accurate update soon.  it is a safe border area and i saw western families when i was there 7 years ago.  no current info on cost of visa, the people i know that go there regularly are thai and don't need them.

Hi Dave ,

I have been to both of the casinos many times , mostly on my 90 day border run . It is possible for you to gain entry to the casinos by showing your p/p to the Thai border police and pay them 500 baht  ( not stamped ). Then when you pass to the other side you will have to pay 300 baht to the Cambodian police .Thais pay 50 baht I believe but must show their p/p . Not sure if that entitles you to an overnight stay or if you have to return to Thai before the border office closes . I would not recommend it for a young family although there are young children running around and some of the clientele are not what you would expect to see in a western casino ( smoking and drinking is allowed throughout ) . Some of the table games they play are alien to me but are a variation on western games although roulette can be played with a croupier . I say that as there is a plastic domed games machine roulette table in the Royal Hill resort . Both casinos have many slot machines with jackpots up to 1.5 million baht .  One further thing worth mentioning is that you have to park your car 1/4 mile away and then take a motorbike taxi to the border gate . If you need assistance there are always agents willing to help you for 100 baht tip .

i got some new info last night, i'm in buriram now and spoke with a thai that just came back from the o'smach border.  coincidentally, there is a news article on thai visa this morning about chong sa ngam border crossing.  there are two crossings in the vicinity of surin.  one is referenced in post #3 and is more convenient to sisaket (that is chong sa ngam).  the one i reference in post #4 is closer to buriram.  and the casino i was confused about, sangam resort, is at the chong sa ngam crossing.  so you've got two choices of crossing if starting from surin.  stay at o'smach resort at one or sangam resort at the other.  good luck and enjoy the trip.
