Calls for investigation as criticism mounts about alleged lapses in alert system.

BANGKOK: -- DEVASTATING losses from raging floods in the South and Prachuap Khiri Khan province have led to criticism of authorities over the country’s flood early-warning system.

The inundation has caused multiple casualties and major property damage.

In the eyes of many, such an adverse impact could have been averted or at least made less severe had relevant authorities properly warned people about early enough.

Chainarong Sretthachau, a lecturer at Mahasarakham University, complained publicly via social media that the country had emergency response plans in place with clear assignments of what each relevant unit or official must do.

governments almost always fail their people. not just in Thailand.

it is just so sad to see the Thai people suffer when you could see the storm coming on  weather satellites, up to a day in advance.

not that anyone would know what to do with the information.

you can see the new storm approaching Hua Hin and Bangkok right now:

It is worse in Thailand than most places in the west, and is both because of a bad culture and a long run of bad leadership:
Not thinking for themselves, low education levels, lack of rational thinking, no one is taking responsibility, criticizing is taboo, extremely little planning, priorities, superstition, carelessness for anything outside their own family's interest... and so on...
It isn't just the govt, they all have to take the blame, change the way they think, be responsible, don't listen so much on what mommy wants and not sit and wait for woowoo to happen...

There will be no comments from the government regarding the flooding, absolutely no way.... to admit any mistake regarding early warnings would be a loss of face, and we cannot have that then can we :whistling:

most of the damage in the south was caused by unseasonal heavy rain and flash flooding. When you look at the reason houses flooded it is because the people do not allow for any drainage as it means less land to use, they build on low lying areas and if there are drains they either block them up with rubbish or backfill them. The roads that washed out/flooded did so because the contractors that built them did not do it properly, again profits were more important than following specified  requirements, again lack of proper drainage is a big cause but the majority of the problems stem from cutting costs for profit. Until thai people actually start taking the blame for what they do we will not see any different, they blame everyone else except themselves, while govt can be held responsible for some things a lot of the fault is also on the ones complaining

maybe the people responsible for the flood warning system watch CNN for their weather information. (the CNN thailand weather forecast and news reports are blocked here along with thai commercials which must really please those companies that paid for the advertising_)

Just to be clear your saying that people in an country that have real low English speaking capabilities are depending on CNN (English speaking) news for their warnings. Does not really make sense to me, I would have thought that local news in their own language would be better. Also I doubt that CNN gives warnings per province.. just does not add up sorry.

If people start listening/watching/reading news and think by them selves and not only use face book and other places then they know that something is happening!!!

Thursday they were collecting money here in the college (Sukhothai) to send with some students and teachers that were going to help in the south (13-21 January) and at least 2 teachers were surprised when they came and asked for donations as they didn't know that there is/was flooding in the south of Thailand!!!

Those people in the South will need to hold their breath. But maybe learning to swim while you're drowning is a good motivator.

I'm sure YL at the moment is not on their minds but more what is the Prayut government doing to protect them NOW.

Hard to do ANYTHING against flash floods (the reservoir things is a different thing gross negligence). Flash floods, making sure the locals don't deforest too much. Will take quite a bit of time and micromanagement to do that. Totally different from building a few dams and monitoring a situation.

In the south, warnings were several days in advance.  For PKK, I didn't see the warning until it was nearly on top of them.  MET radar in Chumpon is faulty and Surat has been offline for months.  Central Thailand coverage very spotty.

maybe all those commenting on the floods here in the south need to find out the truth before sticking their feet in their mouths. We had flash floods, it was dry one day and flooded the next, you cant do bugger all about rivers etc that are simply over flowing. The biggest problems are caused through graft and greed and that has effected everyone else.
