Is Uber reducing drink driving?

Recommended Posts

I have noticed a number of the people who drink in my local bar using the reasonably-priced Uber taxi service to travel to and from the bar...

Is this offering a real opportunity to reduce drink driving? Even half a dozen less drunks in 'control' of a motorised vehicle is a start.

Not sure about in Chiang Mai but elsewhere....

some say Uber does reduce drink driving: https://www.cato.org/blog/study-uber-reduces-drunk-driving-increases-vehicle-theft

Others say it doesn't: http://money.cnn.com/2016/07/29/technology/uber-drunk-driving/

Thanks, Jonathan, interesting articles. The second article is relatively old and does state:

"... The researchers aren't ruling out the idea that ride-hailing companies could have an impact in the future. It might also play a larger role in smaller cities and towns, where taxis and buses aren't readily available. The study focused on large cities..."

The key point being: "...It might also play a larger role in smaller cities and towns, where reliable[sic] taxi and bus services[sic]  aren't readily available..."

You really answered your own question with your first post. I one drunk gets in a ubber taxi instead of his own car then yes it's reducing drink driving.

Yes agree............

very........Old Joke.....

With holiday season upon us I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving.

As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the
authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends. Well, two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit.

That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home.

Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident.

This was a real surprise as I had never driven a cab before, I really don't know
where I got it from,  and now that it's in my garage, I am not quite sure what to do with it.

Yes, statistically one less drunk on the road does mean Uber and the like can help reduce drink driving...pretty worthless statistic.

But, I was raising a point for discussion that  readily available, reasonably-priced,  consistent, reliable and safe taxi-type services could encourage enough people to leave their vehicles at home if they planned to drink alcohol or, to offer an opportunity to collect their vehicle the next day if they drank more than sensible when planning to drive - assuming they, their friends or the bar owner had a modicum of sense. This would go some way in reducing reducing the risk of injuring or killing innocent people or themselves, and have a real impact on the number of injuries and deaths on the roads caused by drunk riders/drivers.

'Funny' joke about the stolen taxi, wouldn't be so funny if it was true and ended in a serious road accident, particularly if you or yours were involved...I'm not prudish or PC in any way, in fact far from it, and I do like a cold one or two or three or four, but there is a time for humour...and times when it's not really appropriate, in fact just crass and a sign that it would be better to say nothing!

You must be 1 of the many people getting paid to put uber in a good light.

How pathetic. .....because it's all falling apart for uber the likes of goldmanSach sand all the money backers are getting sacred.

Top Man yourself...Uber are paying people to show them in a good light! Where do I apply?

I don't much care about Uber investor returns or the success of Uber as a company. I referred to Uber as they seem to be the only service of this type who are operating at a noticeable level at the moment, I haven't come across anyone using Grab Taxi as yet. And, the standard taxi-type services offered in Chiang Mai are expensive, unreliable and sometimes uncomfortable, especially after 9pm!

If Uber does fall apart, hopefully another company offering similar services will fill the hole they leave behind.

Was you a little squiffy when you typed your post, not driving home I hope, or do you always write so badly?

Ah, maybe you fell off your motor cycle after a few cold ones and damaged your fingers.

Not if your the one he didn't knock down and kill it isn't although that could never be proved of course but you get my drift.

Good point, I do get your drift...BTW the contraction of 'you are' is 'you're'...do you get mine?

I guess I used 'pretty worthless' as that's how I say my response to a  post made pretty worthless with a crass joke!

I just can't stop myself responding...I'm calling an Uber I need a beer, added benefit, my smart phone keyboard is too small to type on.

Yeah sorry about my writing. It's just I listen to a lot of radio and the public think their getting a good deal , at the same time the drivers are getting nothing, but to  subsidise the drivers the tax person is paying .people cannot see it yet but when all the competition is gone, do you really think you will get a taxi cheap? The only winners will be the banks, and thrust me I work in the city of London. So sorry for my writing but your right, I've had a few. Lol
