PATTAYA: -- Pattaya police raided a house in Sukhumvit Road yesterday where they arrested a Filipino gang of card sharps.

The Filipinos had been in Thailand for about a year and were renting the two story townhouse in Si 62, Banglamung.

Police said that they had conned seven European men out of five million baht playing cards, reported Pattaya News on Facebook.

The Filipinos would befriend their victims in places like Beach Road and Walking Street before taking them back to the house and fleecing them with a dishonest gambling game.

Arrested on a warrant were Oliver Gamboa, 47, Merinda Ramirez, 64 and Jovelyn Tabangcura, 33. Other gang members remain at large.

Victims were several older German men as well as a UK national and an Australian.

Police took cards and fake Thai and US money into evidence and detained the gang members, reported Pattaya News on Facebook.

Yes the dude on the right got some air under his shirt all-right and now he can't afford to buy a new one.

Going back to strangers house to play cards is asking for trouble and anybody with just a little bit of common sense would walk away.

Card "Sharps" :cheesy:

In the UK they're called Card "Sharks".

Tsk, tsk, another short-coming of British-English. Sharks don't play cards, but those who are sharp at cards can take advantage of you.

I think you will find 'shark' and 'sharp' are interchangeable in this context.

Don't quite comprehend how 7 guys can be relieved of 5 MTHB.  That is 700.000 each. Who has that much cash on them? Anyway, stick with the old saying "You can't con an honest man" .....

Dont understand why the foreigners were not arrested for Gambling.

Thought it was illegal here.

And sharks don't loan money either.

Just move away from Filipino's, most of them are up to no good, and will cheat and scam you. Whatever happened to common sense?

Sounds like you have had some bad experiences with Filipinos. Yes, some tend to have a bait and switch mindset and others are expecting handouts for no better reason than you may have more money than they have. I love the PI and, at times, the Filipino people.

However, I can never get used to the constant scams on just about anything and the expectation that you owe them money or a gift of some sort. If you take your vehicle in for repairs, you will invariably need gas when you go to pick it up. When you return from abroad, you hear, "where's my gift?" from complete strangers. If they are invited to dinner; they expect 'BH' (bring home) to take food home. At Christmas time--which starts in September--it is almost impossible to go through a day without someone, people you may not even know, asking for a present.

However, as you say, use some common sense, realize those short-comings and simply laugh-off any expectations of something for nothing, you can find some good people and many lovely ladies.

Its incredible how people fall for this, I know a chap who has a friend who was taken there last week the guy won £5000 in chips but for the Sharps to pay him they needed a debit card , I guess when they were trying to  get the money the bank blocked the card. He never lost a penny , the bank saw an unusual activity.

The most amazing thing is he got involved as he met a women at an ATM, when recanting the story he said "Maybe  she was not involved in it "   amazing.

I worked with some Filippinos who wanted me to come to theirs to play cards. Make sure you bring some money they said. They seemed quite overbearing, so I told them that I'm a catholic and gambling is very bad in my religion. That really got under their skin.

Hand over ATM card with details  and gets taken,,,, he was lucky ,  I met the chap briefly on Saturday,

I have a friend who was scammed in a series of card games in Bangkok way back in 1988, by Thais. He's not a particularly stupid guy but he was only in his early to mid twenties than and maybe he was a bit naive. I don't know too many details but there was a young woman involved and he lost about 200,000 baht, quite a lot back then. Sadly, he hasn't been back to Thailand since.

So, its not a new scam and its not just Filipinos.
