20,000 baht personal limit rule @ Suvarnabhumi Airport

Featured Replies

Travelling OS on 1 May for a week and the Mrs has brought to my attention through her Thai forum account that customs have been really cracking down on people coming in, however I couldn't confirm if Farangs were the target or if it just applied to Thai's.

She says that for example: you come into the country with your iPhone 6 or whatever which is worth over 20,000 baht, they will include that in the 20,000 baht limit, unless you declare it before you leave ?

We all know how quick things add up, camera's, laptops, etc etc

Has anyone experienced anything of this nature of late, as the last thing I want to do is to get into a wrangle with someone who just doesn't get it when the penny drops.

Nope, and certainly not for a tourist. That would only be for new, boxed items. Everyone has a smartphone nowadays. Folks just came through with four iPads / iPhones between them, lots of other goodies + cash etc.

I've entered BKK from China several times this year, and they don't even give me a second look- much less my luggage.  And I always travel with a couple of mid-high end laptops for business and personal plus the usual phones, tablet, etc.

I have noticed that the people who spend a long time at immigration getting their passport stamped in also have a higher risk of getting asked to x-ray their bags.

Notebooks, mobile phones etc don't attract any duty in Thailand anyway. Only 7% VAT.

I thought the 20,000 baht thing was cash that you had to have to show how you will fund your holiday.

No?

Concerning limits :

Currency Import regulations: Local currency: up to THB 50,000.- per person or THB 100,000.- per family holding one passport. Foreign currencies: unlimited. However, amounts of foreign currency exceeding USD 20,000.- (or equivalent) must be declared to a Customs Officer upon arrival by all travelers.

Concerning cash requirements :

The amounts vary for different visas:
1. Transit Visa holder: Must hold minimum THB 10,000 per passenger or THB 20,000 per family.
2. Tourist Visa holder: Must hold minimum THB 20,000 per passenger or THB 40,000 per family.
3. Visa on Arrival: Must hold minimum THB 10,000 per passenger or THB 20,000 per family.
4. Non Immigrant Visa holder: Must hold minimum THB 20,000 per passenger or THB 40,000 per family.

The people I read about who were asked about the money were either Indians or farangs with many visa runs, over stays.......

When you fly from Europe, North America or Australia to BKK, they know that 20000 Baht would be for too many visitors a 2 day budget, sometimes a day budget, maybe 3 days..... they would not ask about the money at all.... They know that only your ticket costs probably that kind of money or more.....

So no worries fellows
