The Land Transport department has announced the results of its promised checks on the roadworthiness of minivans.

Out of a total of 138,939 minivans checked some 9,422 were deemed to have failed some parts on the checklist. The department said many of these were minor and operators were ordered to make immediate repairs or find replacements parts.

Earlier it was announced that the checklist would look at tires, doors, escape hammers and extinguishers among about twenty items.

Some 672 vans were found to be dangerous and unfit for service. These were ordered out of service immediately with requirements that the vehicles be changed for new ones.

Some 265 drivers were not up to scratch. Of these 25 were banned from driving in the future. Of the remaining 240 many had no license or a license of the wrong kind.

These were fined and ordered to update their documents but were not disqualified.

The checks took place at 229 checking stations nationwide and followed orders after several serious accidents around new year.

One accident in Chonburi resulted in the fiery death of 25 people in a van and a pick-up.

Aahh yes OK, I will buy new tires tomorrow is this B200 enough to reassure you officer?....

Doomed, not quite does appear to heading in that direction at a rapid rate of knots though.....

7%failed,...you reckon?

Think that percentage is probably tits up if my personal experience is anything to go by....

Had a rethink and there is no way I reckon 7% are safe!!!!!

And the % of drivers passing the roadworthiness test is.................

That cannot be right unless they never actually tested the safety belts. They are there but unusable in every van I have been in, why do they do that

So, how many % will be unfit a year later...and a year each thereafter...?

Will there be annual crackdowns or some permanent stringent systems of checks and penalties?

Should that not read 70% ?

Did they check the brakes???

Brakes are always failing.

It's not just the mini vans. The Gov't misses the point - its the drivers that are too dangerous to be on the road and that figure is around 70%. Most of these accidents are caused by road worthy vans driven by people who should not be behind the wheel.

No licence = not banned?

The above statistics are a disgrace.

Dangerous non-road-worthy vans being used.

Unlicensed or banned drivers driving passengers.

And no system "was" in place to find this ?

What does the transport minister do ? Does he care ? Is he responsible for this ? And for all the deaths that have occurred because of this ?

Life here is getting "cheaper".

escape hammers

The hammers would probably be used by terrified passengers, either to escape or assault the driver.

Around 7% of minivans fail roadworthiness checks...

These were easy to check, they just had to look for smoke, flames and dead people.

The other 93% couldn't be checked as they were driving too fast, and pretty much never stopped.

They've already checked 138000 vehicles?....I say impossible!

If they have, then they should share their vehicle testing regime with all other governments, 'cos it must be really something!!

If you can believe the percentage sounds really to low TIT

It's a misprint, should be 77% fail. I wonder if the rigorous checks were done sitting down with a cup of tea and a cigarette.

I've stopped traveling in these things, would rather drive for five hours to Chiang Mai than a 30 min trip in a minivan.

For thrill seekers only.

There is no law in Thailand.

Imagine what was wrong with those 25 that got banned....

And the remaining 240, many had no license or wrong license.. And what else?

Im glad they go after the drivers (the drivers and their reckless ruthless driving are the problem, not the vehicles). But i cant imagine that the drivers will change much after getting a slap on the wrist for driving without license... Jesus christ...

Ha ha ha 55555 don't you love the Thai sense of Humor

Brakes are always failing.

because the stupid drivers don't know how to use the gears for breaking even an auto box can give you breaking if its needed

I Don't like to rush my life away but I can't wait to read about the 50% less road deaths next new year .

The numbnuts in control of the majority of traffic volume on the roads  here just can not seem to be able to adjust to changing conditions, be it weather, road condition, volume of traffic, etc. They seem to be thinking about their final destination and ignore the need that can/will arise that requires them to change what they are thinking about.

Some people are discribed as being unable to walk and chew gum at the same time. Safe driving requires total mind set on driving, not carrying on a consversation, looking at the country side, having a snack, etc.
