Driving licence in Samui-phangan

One question:

If one already has a a drivers licence from an English speaking country like the U.K. or Australia then it is not necessary to take the full test correct? This would make sense because in Australia it takes a full year to get a licence rather than a few hours.

I enquired with the DLT office and they said my licence could be a fake and that I need to go to bangkok and get it certified as a genuine by the consulate. Is this just a 'made up on the spot rule because I'm having a bad day' or a genuine requirement?

I thought to myself that the cost and effort to get it certified would be more than just doing the test from scratch. Unless there is someone in Samui that can do it? I read somewhere about a consulate officer in residence?

I thing you are having a bad day, about the certifying part  in BKK part...

I used my Canadian license the first time and all went well and relatively easily... when I renewed after 5 years was required to sit through the rather boring video and do the full test ... I suspect everyone needs to do now..(at least on Samui) ...
