The helicopter shown in the one news article was not the same type. The one use was smaller and is the only one the Park service has and could not hold the cage.  A net was used instead from what I was told by staff involved.  The destination was deep into the jungle from the pickup point and not accessible by truck. There was an unplanned time delay so the Bear woke up sooner than it should have. Have you ever encounter a 90 Kg Black Bear? Do you know how big their claws are?  Or it's teeth? You would not want to be on the receiving end.  The animal is very strong and did break free on it's own.

 

Several things went wrong in this case and no one individual is to blame. It was an unfortunate accident. Yes, it could have been prevented and could have been handled better but sometimes in Thailand you work with what you have.  Requests for proper equipment from the Ministry had been made last year and still has not been fulfilled to this day.  Would that have changed the outcome?  Maybe.   Better training? Maybe.

 

I can say all the people involved are deeply sicken by what happened more than the public knows.  If the Ministry wants to throw blame it should start at the top. Get the Park service the equipment they need and now.  Because this isn't first animal rescue that will occur nor will it be the last.  And to the Activist....go activate or do whatever you do...don't criticize for what you don't know.

Why wasn't it underslung & how can a live animal be placed in an aircraft where neither crew or pilots have any protection when it wakes up?

Ok. A very sad lesson learned here and pertinent info missing from the news report. Working with dangerous animals especially tranquilised ones can be fraught with unseen eventualities. As exact required dosage can vary from animal to animal regardless of the Veterinary experience of the breed. In this case travel time may have been the mitigating circumstance as any extra or initial larger injections may well have inadvertantly led to the beautiful creature demise also. I think we are all familiar with Government's mismanagement to provide funds in a timely fashion for essential equipment in ones day to day endeavors to perform efficiently. I used to fly choppers and I can just imagine the pilot's concern at a confused and angry bear running amok just behind him, as he looked around the jungle for a safe place to land quickly. Perhaps one of those GoFundMe donation accounts, that people use on Facebook or where ever, in conjuction with this story. Might be a good way to raise money for the missing equipment, needed to avert this sort of tragedy again. Food for thought. Anyway, I for one applaud their efforts for at least helping these creatures, despite this one terrible and unfortunate event. I wish them well for the future and R.I.P. black bear.

I have since inquired again to the persons involved in this incident. I'm getting two stories and I really believe it's the embarrassment, save face factor that is causing it.  The pilot (a personal friend) had to fly a team to the drop off point and return to pick up the bear. That took longer than expected. The Vet who I also know, made a hard judgement call on how much sedative to give. Not an exact science. What I understand now is the Bear was securely slung under in a net (again who to believe). The Bear also had a GPS tracker attached. A cloth was used to cover it's eyes as they do in all cases. All was well during the flight until the cloth flew off.  That's when it went bad.  The Bear panicked (so would you) and extricated himself out the net and fell before the pilot could take any evasive action.  Even then there wasn't much he could have done.  End of story.

 

Khao Yai National Park is known World Wide for it's conservation and training programs.  They take great pride in their efforts and on several occasions I've been a part in those efforts, unfortunately not this one. Would it have mattered? Maybe and maybe not. They are excellent at what they do. This may just be the wake up call needed for the government to equip the Park with the equipment they need.  Let's hope so.

 

And by the way, the National Park System in Thailand is looking for Volunteers both Thai and Foreigners.  It's been started at Khao Yai and all National Parks are to follow suit. Volunteer positions for Foreigners are any position that a Thai National could not do....usually Language translation for one. But check with the nearest Park and inquire at the Management Office of the Director for that Park. Not all Parks are setup as of yet but they will be.  This comes down from the Minister or Parks and the Inspector Generals Office.  There could be local flyers but not sure. I can only speak for Khao Yai.

I know this is tragic and what happened to this bear is terrible, but when I imagine a bear falling from so high, it makes me chuckle.  It's not the bear's death.  That makes me sad.  Just the fall.  I guess because that bear would have absolutely no idea what's happening and it's such an odd thing to see.  I know I'm going to hell so don't bother telling me.

Volunteer (work for free) at the National Parks system that has an ongoing policy of vastly overcharging non-Thais for the privilege of entering the National Parks?

 

Are they going to overcharge foreigners who want to work as volunteers for the privilege of volunteering?

 

Are they going to sponsor volunteering work permits for the non-Thai volunteers?

The body has since been recovered,  mulched and fed to the fish in Phuket

Crazy I know, it's a double standard no doubt. It opens a can of worms on many levels. You have one Minister trying to do the right thing and then another doing exactly the opposite.  And of course Immigration doing it's own thing and that's a whole different issue.  That's Politics.  Same disconnect here as in other Countries.  The questions posed has been raised repeatedly.  But if you volunteer or allowed to, you do not pay.  But it takes situations like this to finally hit some in higher offices in the face to get with the program.  I just go with the flow.  Their country their rules. I'm a guest and always will be.

I would never volunteer for the National Parks here, as long as they maintain their discriminatory entrance fee policy.

 

However, there are many other worthwhile places that I WOULD be willing to volunteer -- if the various authorities including Immigration didn't make it virtually impossible to due so in a fully legal manner and without risking your status to remain in the country.

 

It's their loss, but apparently they're too dumb to know it.
