Crowd-control officers face Dhammakaya Temple supporters with metal fences separating them at Pathum Thani’s Klong Luang Central Market yesterday.

Dhammakaya supporters say monks must have control in trials to defrock clergy

BANGKOK: -- USING THE Dhammakaya Temple case as an example, the Cabinet will soon propose that the Supreme Sangha Council and the National Office of Buddhism (NOB) speed up reforms in Buddhism, Justice Minister Suwaphan Tanyuvard-hanarevealed yesterday.

The council has already assigned three senior monks to join a reform panel.

Suwaphan also said the decision whether to disrobe the fugitive former abbot Phra Dhammachayo was at the discretion of ecclesiastical administrators.

The monkhood, however corrupted you may or not consider it to be, is an Institution with immense influence, perhaps power, in this society.

This regime, representing as it does a small section of society, must if it is to retain power harness all the possible sources of influence and control.

Ah, yes. A quick reform of people's deeply held beliefs. What could go wrong? Always good to get a national government entangled in religious conflicts.

If they just focused on only what crime was committed and did not muck about with religion, they would be better off.  But the junta just has to be all powerful controlling everything.

It is not a religion rather a philosophy. in Thailand that philosophy appears to involve, drug abuse, money laundering, Extortion rackets and anything else that goes with an organised national crime syndicate. In fact Thai Buddhism is a far cry from what it should be.

You think reform is not needed?

So convince the followers of this, and they will desert. Correct? Or I guess you can waste millions in taxpayer money to surround the temple with security forces and risk violent confrontation and tragedy. People dismiss the sincerity of others' religious convictions at their own peril.

Yes, but by whom ?   The junta is not very good at playing with fire.  Are they going to article 44 the religion ?   A buffoonery, no matter how much power they have, have their limits to reform and effect change.

What could possibly be contrived as a tragedy if these crooks and their supporters open up with the weapons which they no doubt have stocked up with given their criminal connections, and they end up being the losers ?  Drug dealing and organised supply dealerships, money laundering for the drug king pins have possible killed more people than those few crooks dressed up in Saffron robes, thinking the stupidly of peoples beliefs will protect them.   Just like anything else in this country,  be the headlines for 3 days and then totally forgotten about.  The sooner it happens then sooner the tax payers money, which concerns you,  can be better spent. submarines, cruise missiles perhaps.

I think you need to take a deep breath.
