Been here 20 years, I would like to divorce my American wife. Have not seen her in 20 years. She seems to be causing me trouble behind my back. She also holds an

insurance policy on me. There is no kids, only property, since we both lived in California. I don't know where to start.

It is possible to DIY a California divorce but only if she agrees to cooperate. If not, you indeed need a lawyer licensed to practice in California.

There is nothing you can do about an insurance policy she holds.

If the property was acquired during your marriage then it is a 50-50 split under California law. Though if she is living in it and does not want to move/sell, and as you are in Thailand, enforcing that could prove difficult.

Remaining legally married after your marriage is over, is not a good idea. Among other things, any assets you have acquired in these past 20 years are technically 50% hers (and vice versa) and you could also have liability for her debts. So should indeed get divorced, but start by contacting your ex and asking her if she will sign for a divorce.

It might be worthwhile to waive your 50% stake in the property if it leads to an easy divorce...but your call.

As Robin Williams said, prepare to have your testicles extracted via your wallet.

No one likes to talk about this but one of the reasons he killed himself was due ro the financial strain from multiple divorces. They try to say it was due to disease but he let it slip a few times about this
