Room-service vice women are jailed

ELEVEN Thai prostitutes have been jailed after being caught operating out of a Manama block of service flats.

An Indian receptionist was also jailed by the Lower Criminal Court for running a place of prostitution and for encouraging prostitution.

The women, aged 24 to38 , were caught in a vice squad raid, after undercover officers posed as potential customers.

They were each jailed for a year, to be followed by immediate deportation.

But they will be released immediately and deported if they each pay a fine of BD1,000.

The receptionist, aged34 , was jailed for two years on the first charge and six months on the second, followed by deportation.

His alternative is a fine of BD2,000, followed by deportation.

The man was acquitted of living in part off the earnings of prostitution.

Undercover vice squad officers went to the service flats after a tip-off that they were being used for prostitution, the court heard.

They rented a flat for BD 20and the receptionist gave them three room numbers at which he said they could contact Thai girls for sex. He also sent another staff member with seven girls for the men to choose from, the court heard.

Once the girls entered the men's room, other officers raided the block, arresting all 11 girls, at1 am, in July last year.

The girls admitted to police that they were prostitutes and had been charging BD 10to BD 15per person.

The receptionist told police that whenever customers asked for girls, he would give them the women's room numbers, so they could call them to their rooms.

He said he was acting on instructions from his boss, who was also an Indian.

The Thai women spoke only their own language and needed an interpreter in court.
