Politicians offered mixed reactions to the government’s move to collect back taxes from 60 politicians who served in the governments of Abhisit Vejjajiva and Yinluck Shinawatra.

The Auditor-General has accused them of not paying taxes fully and has demanded the Revenue Department investigate and punish those who had broken the tax law.

Former premier Yingluck raised questions about fair treatment while former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij said he was ready to subject himself to probe regarding his tax returns. “Let the tax officials do their jobs. I’m not worried,” said Korn.

Korn has been criticised for not making enough efforts during his term as finance minister to collect back taxes of more than Bt10 billion from former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Auditor-General had investigated the tax returns of 113 politicians and found that 60 of them, whose wealth increased after their term in office ended, might not have fully discharged their tax liability.

All them are rightly concerned with regards fairness under martial law.

Yingluck's comment to every single issue is "it's not fair". What she really means is others have done it, got away with and maybe some are still doing it so why can't the Shins.

Never any actual words in defense or apologies.

Of course explaining wealth includes explaining sources as well as showing appropriate taxes have been paid. Yingluck is right to be concerned if the report is true and the revenue are really going to audit the taxes from her and the Abhisit government's days.

I'm sure the off shore accounts, trails and details will be all well hid. Got to give them credit, when it comes to that, they are really world class.

As in the old saying "Pay me now or pay me later" later has arrived. Seems this targeted tax collection is much like laser surgery. With all the wealth in this country and the tax office so "efficient" I am sure the moneyed gentry are under constant "audit" This whole chase only a certain segment of the population must stand out as being odd but it will be center stage right up to election time and beyond.

You can bet your boots the first comment is right. I doubt if Abhisit is on their "hit" list and is being audited. As with most politicians they give us a little to keep us quiet on their road to personal enrichment. Its the nature of the beast.

Yet according to the report, former finance minister in Abhisit''s government quote from the OP "Korn Chatikavanij  said he was ready to subject himself to probe regarding his tax returns. “Let the tax officials do their jobs. I’m not worried,” said Korn. "

Bit confused here is Korn a spokesman for Abhisit? Is it his nickname? I do not get the connection.

Well, I guess he could just pro-actively share those returns, right?

How do you know what she means? She simply asked for fair treatment which is reasonable enough especially as there is prima facie evidence that the Junta and its supporters are determined to destroy the Shinawatras.

Actually though I wouldn't be exactly surprised if there were back taxes due, the Shinawatras unlike some other politicians/bureaucrats/generals have at least genuine and legal commercial sources of income.

I understand politicians with a net worth of more than Bt 50 million are to be scrutinised, a sensible enough level. As to Khun Korn he has heaps more than that and as far as I know (by chance I know a lot about his business background) all honourably and legally earned. So his "bring it on" comment doesn't surprise.

As to the tax audit of generals with unexplained wealth naturally that line of investigation is not to be pursued.Deal with it suckers
