Pattaya to hold traditional Songkran fair

PATTAYA: -- Pattaya City will organise a fair to promote Thai traditional values during the Songkran festival from April 12 to 20 in an effort to correct its image as a sex city, the mayor said on Thursday.

 

Pattaya Mayor Pol Maj-General Anan Charoenchasri said the South Pattaya Walking Street fair will be held on Pattaya Soi 6.

 

Anan said operators of all types of businesses were asked to join the fair that would include a procession of a sacred Buddha image and traditional games and Songkran water splashing.

 

He said business operators were asked to take part in the fair by having their employees dress in Thai traditional costumes.

Last year Thaivisa haters of songkran jumped on a false report that their would be a drought and that Songkran should be cancelled to "help the poor farmers"

This was despite the Thai weather bureau stating there would be no such drought. And they were right.

 

I think  a lot of the negativity here comes from people with no friends who feel a bit left out and hate seeing the Thais have so much fun. The grumpy old Farang who are scared of a bit of water can just stay inside for a few days, you won't be missed.

 

Getting the the soi six girls to dress a bit less slutty on a day where Pattaya is full of children is a reasonable idea. They had trouble down there last year when a Farang was filmed performing a sex act on a drunk Thai women on the street, they probably don't want a replay performance. Kids don't need to see this sort of thing, it is not the sort of thing you would ever see a Thai male doing in public.

I have no problem with the Thais celebrating their New Year, it's the drunk  Farangs not teenagers either firing high powered water guns of cold water at pedestrians and 'headshots' at scooter riders aand the the other Farangs riding on scooters with pillion passengers carrying water pistols with back packs of water.

I have been reading Thaivisa for years. 

I never felt the need or urge to talk to people I don't know, so no need to join.

I still find it a little odd. I would think the majority of people who read thaivisa wouldn't feel the need to join. Sometimes it is better to be a listener than a talker.

 

 

I do remember reading about songkran last year and the laughable comments from the anti songkran thaivisa weather forecasters who were claiming we would all starve because of the drought caused by people playing with water on a hot day. It was rediculous.

 

i only joined to draw attention to the rubbish issue in Pattaya which is something that concerns me. Now I keep getting notifications. But really I have better things to do.

 

i doubt if anyone was banned from here they would be "trying to sneak back in" as you put it.

No, that was the national road toll for the seven days, which they got to a below average of 76 per day. At a time where millions of people are diving all around the country to visit family and friends. 

But the authorities were very vigilant last year which probably reflected the lower toll.

So, if you want to play with statistics, how about Songkran saves lives!

 

And to the people who called for it to be cancelled because of the drought that never happened, well there was flooding. You should have been out there splashing water. People died in the floods, nobody died of thirst!

Hmm yes get them all together at a young age and show them how to waste a valuable commodity makes sense to me. Maybe have a slide show showing them the origin of Songkran up to the present day. Explain to them how the present day Songkran is a big money generator commercialism at its highest level. I fail to see any of the old Songkran in what takes place only a Baccanalian festival which takes its toll on the roads and the environment. It takes money out of peoples pockets for a momentary high instead of food on the table and other necessities of life. Have a good time.

To be fair, when the mayor announces a week long event " to promote Thai traditional values during the Songkran festival from April 12 to 20 in an effort to correct its image as a sex city" on Soi 6 it is either a misprint/mistake or indications of a severe curtailment of activities there.

Yes they did. Check it out rather than just disagree.

 

And there are kids everywhere during Songkran. There is no signs at either end saying "no children allowed" so how are people from out of town supposed to know?

if you want to view slutty women, fine, go to a gogo bar, there is no need for it to be on a public road (or private road open to the public) near the beach on a school holiday with children everywhere.

The songkran festival is a unique, hugely popular, fun Thai festival that brings in tourists  from all over the world.

i don't think anyone likes piles of rubbish everywhere.

It's the same argument every year. However, last year there was a very bad drought and the wasting of water during this holiday did not help at all as the prices of vegetables did skyrocket later in the year when they had to import food.

I have seen  so many Songkran's that I have lost count. In most places, the holiday is really only 1 day of water throwing. However, I find the situation allowed in Pattaya to be appalling simply because it is allowed to last for 7 -10 days.  This is way too much for both locals and visitors. It ceases to be 'fun' after a few days of watching people get drunk and disorderly and in some cases  assault females and display sexually explicit activity.

If the Government had  any sense it would limit this holiday to what it should be- 3 days and that's it.

It is pure hypocrisy to speak out against alcohol abuse; drink driving; and unbecoming behavior but then allow it to continue. I wouldn't go near Pattaya during this period if you paid me. I like real fun not the phony nonsense displayed during this period.

I just read a bit of your previous comments.

 

you seem to like an argument, usually just a one word response "no" , you love throwing the troll word around and you make no secret of your distaste for Songkran, year after year.

 

which leads me to believe you would never even be in Soi 6 on a Songkran day, which leads me to believe that you wouldn't have any idea who was around Pattaya beach and its sois on Songkran day. 

 

it would be good to hear from people who actually know what is going on because they have actually expeienced it, not just imagined it. 

You will just have to trust me, there are kids down there during Songkran.

 

This announcement is aimed at making Soi 6 a little more palatable for kids on that day. And that is a good thing.

Yes it would be fine if it was only 1 day, and everyone could avoid it if they wanted to,  but in Pattaya its up to 10 days of running the gauntlet maybe getting ice cold water thrown in your face or your phone ruined by smiling idiots who deliberately target people who request not to be soaked or are driving a motorbike causing them to crash..really if they want to have the water fight I wish they would just close off beach road for a week and let the mayhem be  confined to just that area... as it is  on the 19th the whole city comes to a standstill...it is quite amazing once or twice but gets "old" very quickly.

Of course Soi 6 and many other Soi's in Pattaya have children roaming about. The only thing the Pattaya officials and police are interested in is how much money they can make. There should be signs at the entrance and exit of  Sois indicating that adult entertainment exists to forewarn tourists with children what to expect.

As one of the posters mentioned- the whole concept of Songkran in Pattaya has gotten old and boring. Those of us who have been in Thailand for years already know Pattaya is based upon phony Thai smiles and a love of money. If that's your thing - go for it. Others of us know much better places to spend a holiday.
