MOPH advises tourists to care for their physical health before traveling to developing countries

BANGKOK, 28 March 2017 (NNT) - The Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has advised tourists to take care for their physical health before traveling to developing countries.

MOPH Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrajit said that more than 3.4 million people in Thailand travel abroad each year, while 55 percent of these tourists are traveling to developing countries with ongoing health risks.

He went on to say that the illnesses of travelers are caused by their health conditions that can worsen during the trips. He advised tourists to find detailed information on their desired tourist attractions such as geography and weather conditions and consult with doctors prior to their journey.

Travelers are advised to consult their doctors about their previous health problems, history of drug use and possible vaccinations that could prevent illnesses.

Tourists are also advised to care for their physical health before traveling, avoid people who are showing signs of sickness, and to refrain from activities such as smoking and drinking that could ruin their health.

Are they advising tourists coming to LoS or are they advising Thais heading to other countries where you can catch Dengue, Malaria, Rabies and a whole host of STD's.

I wonder if these other developing countries have countless outlets selling cheap tobacco and booze with many opportunities to hire road vehicles or Jet Skis without a licence or insurance with no previous training on how to operate them safely.

A none too subtle MOPH health warning probably contrived by TAT to try to discourage tourists from going to more popular neighbouring destinations like Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Better all domestic and foreign tourists come to/stay in Thailand and run a different set of health risks like traffic and boating accidents, bashings, diseases from polluted beaches and unsafe fun parks etc.

Chances of health risks in Thailand from activities such as smoking and drinking will soon be seriously diminished when the new taxes needed for the submarines kick in.

Might be easier to just not come to Thailand.

"care for their physical health" - what does that mean? It's very subjective.

"refrain from activities .... that could ruin their health" - another meaningless metric.

Next thing is that immigration will require a Medical Certificate for all people and children entering Thailand as tourists.
