Customers flee as fire breaks out in Uttaradit bar
By The Nation

UTTARADIT: -- About 20 customers and staff at a newly-opened bar in Uttaradit’s Mueang district escaped uninjured after a fire broke out in the entertainment venue late Monday night.

Police said the fire at the New Bangkok pub was caused by an electrical short circuit in the stage area.

The blaze spread through the three-storey pub fast because of flammable foam that was used as soundproofing.

It took firefighters more than an hour to control the blaze.

The pub is owned by Tipwan Mayu, who is in the process of applying for a licence to operate.

“Police said the fire at the New Bangkok pub was caused by an electrical short circuit in the stage area.

“About 20 customers and staff at a newly-opened bar in Uttaradit’s Mueang district escaped uninjured…”

It looks like the electrician did his usual job by failing to install grounding. However, the general contractor was remiss in his job by failing to provide locked exits that would have prevented customers from safely escaping. The survivors should feel very fortunate for that screw up.

A newly opened bar without a license to operate. That should please the insurance company, presuming the owner even had one.

Fortunately there were no locked exit doors as in past tragedies.

I always thought paying the cops was far more important than having appropriate licences. If you have paid not to be raided, why would you want to wait for some paperwork?

You're probably right. However. although "waiting for the paperwork" is a fairly lame excuse it is probably better than pointing out that you don't have a licence but pay the chap  who comes round ThB1000 every month.

This could have been much worse and sounds similar to the Santika Nightclub fire in 2009 that killed 66 people. Both fires started in a similar way and spread fast due to the use of bad materials such as foam and plastic being used in the building.

Obviously no lessons have been learnt from the Santika Nightclub tragedy and the health and safety standards of entertainment venues is still a shambles.

Be careful when out clubbing in Bangkok is all I can say. I would look to see where the fire exits are before beginning to party.

Spot on!
Who sound proofs a pub with styrofoam. That's what America used in Napalm bomb's in Vietnam. This is exactly like the Santika club fire. You know what the scarest thing is. In the house that I live in now the ceiling is made of square shaped syrofoam and strips of aluminium. If there's a fire in my house the chances of getting out quickly are low aswell. And that ain't the end of it as the front garage way or porch ceiling is made of asbestos. I rent of course. But the health and safety is next to zero in Los.
