Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand)

Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) (ABCTL), part of the Aditya Birla Group, is engaged in the production of five major product categories, namely, chlor-alkali, epichlorohydrin, epoxy resins, phosphates and sulphites.

Four separate chemical companies - Thai Organic Chemicals Company (TOCC), Thai Epoxy and Allied Products Company (TEC), Thai Polyphosphate & Chemicals Company (TPC) and Thai Sulphites & Chemicals Company (TSC) - were merged to form Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) in 2006.

Chlor-alkali and epichlorohydrin division
The chlor-alkali plant of (ABCTL) is located in the Eastern Industrial Estate at Map Tha Phut in Rayong province of Thailand. The division commenced production of chlor-alkali products in June 1998. The products include caustic soda 50 per cent (capacity 161,000 mtpa), chlorine 99.7 per cent (71,500 mtpa), hydrochloric acid 35 per cent (72,000 mtpa) and sodium hypochlorite (36,000 mtpa).

As a downstream product of chlorine and feedstock for epoxy division, the unit also has 15,000 mt manufacturing capacity of epichlorohydrin.

Epoxy division
The epoxy division of Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) is a pioneer manufacturer of epoxy resins in the entire ASEAN region. The plant is located in the Map Tha Phut Industrial Estate in Rayong province in Thailand and started commercial production in 1992.

The division has grown significantly over a period of 20 years. In 2004, it installed dedicated production facilities for speciality epoxies, reactive diluents and hardeners. During 2007, the epoxy division implemented de-bottlenecking of its existing production lines and set up dedicated facilities to produce waterborne epoxies, radiation cure epoxies, diluents, hardeners, Bis-F and Novolac pre-cursers and epoxies. In July 2008, the division commissioned a high-performance epoxy adhesive system plant with state-of-art facilities to serve the growing needs of the wind energy industry.

The unit has a capacity of 80,000 tpa and markets its products under the Epotec brand.

Sulphites division
The state-of-the-art manufacturing plant of the sulphites unit of ABCTL is located about 110km from Bangkok in Saraburi province. This division, started in 1995, has an annual capacity of 87,000 mt. It produces sodium sulphite, sodium metabisulphite and sodium bisulphite, sold under the brand names Birlasurf SS, Birlasurf SM and Birlasol 35, respectively.

Phosphates division
The phosphates plant, with a capacity of 85,000 tpa, is located in Samutprakarn, about 20km from Bangkok. It was commissioned in 1984.

The state-of-the art manufacturing facility at Samutprakarn uses proprietary phosphate processes and produces both tech-grade and food-grade phosphates. The plant consists of a sophisticated DCS instrumentation system for automated process control, several neutralising tanks for raw materials input, spray dryers for powder crystallisation, rotary kiln for heat-induced chemical reactions, instantiser, packing and warehousing facilities.

The division offers enriched solutions for a variety of food segments such as cheese, seafood, meat and bakery. The application research team fine tunes phosphate blends to attain optimal formulations that are most suitable for clients' production processes. There is also a fully equipped modern laboratory, application and product development centre and a sensory testing room for in-house analysis.

The product portfolio includes blended phosphates, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, monosodium phosphate, disodium phosphate, trisodium phosphate and speciality blended phosphates used in customised food applications such as seafood, meat, cheese, bakery products etc. ABCTL's products are marketed under the brands Pearl, Gusto and Corino.
